Started as speculative design project, became #TEDx#SXSW talks, a workshop at @RCA & @Cambridge_Uni, nearly became an educational kit & then blood test, settled on ultra affordable #soil test kit. Check out my write-up of @SoilCards field-trip to #Kenya: https://t.co/P4hMUtg2Ge https://t.co/SbzIGXgUjv
We are looking to support outstanding female PhD students involved in crop agricultural research in African Universities to participate in our world-class workshop taking place at the University of Cambridge in Sept. 2018. APPLY here https://t.co/oAwbuGn3u9 & help spread the word
SoilCards just got a shoutout on this @sciencepractice#sxsw panel as example of transferring technology from one domain to another: originally microfluidics technology was developed in healthcare but we have applied it to agriculture
Now listening to a #sxsw panel on the opposite end of the spectrum from SoilCards: the highest-tech American farms: 7500 acres of NDVI photos, leaf testing, gene editing, interactive maps of farm status, drones, tracking device, yield forecasting. Still need soil testing though!
.@wefarm are creating a platform to help small-holder farmers improve their yields, access farming knowledge, sell produce, and access products - from loans to seeds #sxsw#Agritech
1.5bn smallholder farmers living below the poverty line. How might we provide them with precision, sustainable, higher yield agriculture? 70% of the world's food is created by smallholders. The team at @soilcards (@Dr_Tempest@sciencepractice) have some ideas. #sxsw
Q: If you had a magic wand to solve one problem in #smallholder farming in developing countries, what would you solve?
#sxsw panel answers:
Better weather prediction.
Better access to finance for farmes.
Better location data.
And funding for @SoilCards ;)
At #sxsw trade show: Indonesian startup Mycotech produces a woodchip-type board, but instead of cutting down trees, uses mushroom mycelia. = Sustainable building materials
Another farming reference at #SXSW2018. Michael Dell of @Dell talks about partnership with @AeroFarms who increased productivity of farming herbs ~300 fold using vertical farming, using drastically less water
