A potentially historic heat event is taking shape beneath the record-breaking ridge this weekend.

The latest NDFD forecast would push several long-term “threaded record” stations to the brink of—or beyond—their hottest temperature ever observed:

• Billings, Montana: 109°F — new all-time record
• Sheridan, Wyoming: 107°F — ties the all-time record
• Salt Lake City, Utah: 106°F — just 1°F shy
• Rapid City Downtown, South Dakota: 106°F — just 1°F shy

This is the kind of heat that challenges the upper limits of century-plus climate records. The ridge may be breaking records aloft, but the temperatures beneath it could be equally extraordinary.
