The Tamil Nadu police department, once celebrated as the best in our country, has become, over the past few years, a corrupt and incompetent department that does the politicians’ bidding. The initial investigation of the POCSO case against GEM Veeramani, the pedophile who had reportedly sexually exploited many young children, is an example of what the TN police department has transformed into.

Despite the existence of video evidence of the alleged sexual abuse of a minor, the police sought to close the investigation, as they could not identify the victim and the perpetrator. The court refused to accept the report and ordered further investigation.

After reopening the investigation, the police arrested GEM Veeramani and his accomplices and have since identified the minor in the video. More significantly, the investigation has reportedly uncovered multiple survivors, including several who were minors at the time, suggesting that the abuse may have continued over many decades. This case is a stark reminder of the difference that a few upright and determined police officers can make. The swift action taken by the TVK Government following the court's intervention deserves appreciation.

Yesterday, the State police department arrested a former employee of GEM Granites who was in possession of an obscene video involving GEM Veeramani. The investigation cannot stop with GEM Veeramani and his accomplices. Every police officer, politician and influential individual who helped shield him for the past many years must also be brought to justice. It is also reported that a huge sum of money was exchanged in this process. A Special Investigation Team must be constituted immediately to uncover the entire network that allowed this to continue for so long.

It is also important that the TN Police do not repeat past mistakes and that the identities of all victims are safeguarded.

Can Christians have a caste identity and become eligible for reservation?

This is a very sensitive topic, and hence I have exercised caution in my choice of words while sharing my opinions.

Many Christians, especially Dalits, identify themselves as Dalit Christians. The fundamental question is, can Christians have a caste identity?

Legally, the position is nuanced. Under the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950, Scheduled Caste status is presently restricted to specified communities professing Hinduism, Sikhism or Buddhism. Christians are excluded from SC status under the current Order. However, Christian converts from certain historically disadvantaged communities may still qualify under OBC categories, depending on the applicable Central or State list.

From a faith perspective, Christianity does not prescribe a caste system and teaches that all are equal before their God. Therefore, the moment one embraces Christianity and converts, caste identity, in principle, ceases to exist within that faith.

So, if someone identifies as a Christian while continuing to practice caste distinctions, then, it is contradictory to the principles of that faith system. Two prominent communities that continue to identify themselves using caste identities are Dalits (SC) and Nadars (OBC), which, is hypocrisy from a Christianity standpoint.

Now, the other question to ponder is whether conversion happens because someone genuinely wants to embrace a religion based on faith or because they want to escape caste-based oppression.

I think one should voluntarily convert believing and embracing a particular faith system, and by getting lured by material benefits. If someone wants to convert to escape caste-based oppression, then the very conversion has no meaning. Whoever does forced conversion should be punished severely.

This leads to another argument, do converted Dalits face oppression within Christian communities?

According to Christian faith, everyone is equal before their God. So, if someone faces caste-based oppression within that faith system, then it is third-rate hypocrisy on the part of those practicing such discrimination. Such people who continue to practice caste discrimination should think of converting back to their original religion whichever it may be.

Now, most important question is, can converted Christians be part of the reservation system?

Under the present legal framework, Christians cannot claim Scheduled Caste reservation under the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order, 1950. However, this does not mean that Christians are excluded from every form of reservation; some communities may qualify under OBC classifications.

As I mentioned earlier, a Christian oppressing another Christian on the basis of caste is contrary to Christianity itself, and I don’t think caste-based reservation is the solution.

I personally feel that reservation should increasingly take into account the economic condition of people. If an affluent Dalit converted Christian receives caste-based reservation benefits while an extremely poor Brahmin priest receives none, it will be unfair to the Brahmin. One should also understand that Dalits have been oppressed the most by OBCs.

Lastly, families such as the one shown in the video have exploited Christians and made enormous amounts of money in the name of religion, which is also against Christianity.

I rest my arguments here on a sensitive yet complicated topic!

More than 1,000 people caught spitting betel and urinating inside the renovated Colombo Pettah Central Bus Stand have been made to clean the areas they dirtied.

The offenders, including several bus drivers and conductors, were identified through the terminal’s 24-hour CCTV surveillance system.

Over the past seven months, CCTV cameras have flagged 1,286 incidents, while 64 suspects linked to theft, property damage and other offences have been handed over to Police.

பரந்தூர் திட்டத்திற்கு மாற்றாக வேறு இடத்தில் இரண்டாவது விமான நிலையத்தை அமைக்க தமிழக அரசு நிர்வாக ரீதியாக முடிவெடுத்தாலும், புதிய இடத்தைத் தேர்வு செய்வது, மத்திய அரசு மற்றும் சம்பந்தப்பட்ட சட்டப்பூர்வமான அனுமதிகளைப் பெறுவது, ஒப்பந்தப்புள்ளிகள் கோருவது, நிலம் கையகப்படுத்துவது, தேவையான உரிமங்கள் பெறுவது என, விமான நிலையம் செயல்பாட்டுக்கு வர குறைந்தது 10 ஆண்டுகள் ஆகலாம். அதற்குள் மற்ற மாநிலங்கள் வேகமாக முன்னேறிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் நிலையில், தமிழ்நாடு பின்னுக்குத் தள்ளப்படும்.

இன்றைய தேவைக்கே சென்னை விமான நிலையம் போதுமானதாக இல்லை என்பதை முதலில் நாம் ஒப்புக்கொள்ள வேண்டும். சென்னை விமான நிலையத்தின் பரப்பளவு சுமார் 1,300 ஏக்கர். ஆனால், ஹைதராபாத் விமான நிலையம் சுமார் 5,500 ஏக்கர், பெங்களூரு விமான நிலையம் 4,000 ஏக்கர், நவி மும்பை விமான நிலையம் 2,866 ஏக்கர், டெல்லி விமான நிலையம் 5,100 ஏக்கர் பரப்பளவில் அமைந்துள்ளன.

இவ்வளவு குறைந்த பரப்பளவில் இயங்கும் சென்னை விமான நிலையம், குறைந்தபட்சம் பயணிகளுக்கு சிறந்த சேவையை வழங்க வேண்டும். ஆனால், விமான நிலையத்தில் தரையிறங்கும் பகுதியில் இருந்து வெளியே வந்து, உள்ளூர் போக்குவரத்தை அடைவதற்கே பயணிகள் இன்று பெரும் சிரமத்தை எதிர்கொள்கிறார்கள்.

ஒரு காலத்தில் தென்னிந்தியாவின் நுழைவாயிலாக இருந்த சென்னை, இன்று விமானப் பயணிகள் கையாளும் திறனில் 5-வது இடத்தில் உள்ளது. ஆண்டுக்கு சுமார் 3 கோடி பயணிகளை கையாளும் திறன் கொண்ட சென்னை விமான நிலையத்தை விட டெல்லி, மும்பை, பெங்களூரு, ஹைதராபாத் விமான நிலையங்கள் முன்னிலையில் உள்ளன.

மேலும், சென்னை விமான நிலையத்தில் போதுமான டாக்ஸிவேக்கள் மற்றும் ஏர்பிரிட்ஜ்கள் இல்லாத காரணத்தால், பெரிய விமானங்களைக் கையாளும் திறன் கொண்ட Code F விமான நிலையமாக சென்னை விமான நிலையம் வகைப்படுத்தப்படவில்லை. இதனால் A380 போன்ற மிகப்பெரிய விமானங்கள் தரையிறங்க, சென்னை விமான நிலையம் ஏற்றதாக இல்லை. தென்னிந்தியாவில் பெங்களூரு மற்றும் ஹைதராபாத் விமான நிலையங்கள் பெரிய விமானங்களை கையாளும் Code F விமான நிலையங்களாக உள்ளன என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

மேலும், இந்த ஆண்டு மார்ச் மாதத்தில் வெளியான செய்திகளின்படி, பரந்தூர் விமான நிலையத்திற்குத் தேவையான 5,746 ஏக்கரில் சுமார் 1,700 ஏக்கர் நிலத்தை தமிழ்நாடு அரசு ஏற்கனவே கையகப்படுத்தியிருந்ததாகத் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டது. பரந்தூர் திட்டம் தற்போது கைவிடப்பட்டுள்ள நிலையில், அந்த 1,700 ஏக்கர் நிலத்தை தமிழ்நாடு அரசு இனி என்ன செய்யப் போகிறது? இதற்கான தெளிவான பதிலையும் தவெக அரசு, மக்களுக்கு தெரிவிக்க வேண்டும் என்று முதலமைச்சர் திரு @TVKVijayHQ அவர்களைக் கேட்டுக் கொள்கிறேன்.

Today, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru @TVKVijayHQ announced in the assembly that the TN Government has decided to cancel the Parandur Airport Project. TN CM mentioned that certain sites are under consideration, but it would have been helpful if he had also proposed a new site for the second airport near Chennai, as the delay in identifying its location has set the state's development back by at least 10 years.

This announcement of the cancellation of the new airport project carries an opportunity cost that the State Government needs to consider carefully. Even if the TN Government chooses to move forward with a second airport instead of Parandur through an administrative decision soon, finding a site, taking approval from the Central Government and statutory bodies, issuing tenders, acquiring land, and securing licenses could take at least ten years before the airport becomes operational. Meanwhile, other States would be advancing, leaving us behind.

We should first accept that the current airport in Chennai is insufficient even by today's standards. Chennai’s airport spans a 1300-acre land parcel; Hyderabad's airport spans approximately 5,500 acres; Bengaluru's spans 4000 acres; Navi Mumbai's is built on 2866 acres; and Delhi airport spans 5100 acres. With such a small space, the current airport in Chennai should ideally offer a better customer experience, but taking local transport from the arrivals area is a nightmare today.

Chennai was once the gateway of South India. Today, Chennai airport ranks 5th in total passenger-handling capacity, with a capacity of 30 million passengers per year. Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad are above Chennai on this table. The present Chennai airport is not classified as a Code F airport due to inadequate taxiways and aerobridges, which make landing large aircraft such as the A380 unsuitable at Chennai. In the South, the Bengaluru and Hyderabad airports can handle large aircraft.

Considering the above, I request the TN Govt to accelerate the process of identifying a suitable location for the 2nd airport in Chennai at the earliest, as delays in site identification could push us well beyond 10 years. Parties may come and go. Governments will change. But 20 years later, when the people of Tamil Nadu look back, they should not feel suffocated by a sick building that we would still call an airport, because the administrators of the day lacked the ability to forecast.

Also, in March this year, news reports stated that the TN Govt had acquired 1,700 acres for the Parandur airport project, out of the 5,746 acres needed. What does the State govt now intend to do with this acquired land?

This is a real disaster for Tamil Nadu. With this one move the CM has shown that he lacks the pragmatism needed to make Governance a success. Does he have an idea how long the process takes to finalize a location for an airport? Chennai is already a backwater in India. This will push us back a decade even further.

People of Tamil Nadu must realise the mistake we have made. Whether it was Kalaignar or Jayalalithaa they were pragmatic. They may have taken political positions against projects but once in power they mostly accepted them with only a few exceptions.

This is looking more and more like a Tughlaq Government.

And the geniuses thumping their desks for the abandonment of a project is symptomatic of how Tamil Nadu is going down the tube.
