Assume: power loss + dangerous travel + frozen pipes.
Here’s the simple checklist to stay safe for 48–72 hours. 🧊⚠️

2/ 🔋 POWER + LIGHT
✅ Charge phones, battery packs, rechargeable lanterns
✅ Set flashlights in key rooms (kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms)
✅ Avoid candles unless necessary (fire risk goes way up)

3/ 🧊 FOOD + WATER
✅ 3–7 days of ready-to-eat food
✅ Manual can opener
✅ Water: 1 gallon/person/day minimum
Pro tip: fill tubs/containers for flushing toilets if water shuts off

4/ 🧤 HEAT + WARMTH
✅ Layer up (base layer + hoodie + coat)
✅ Blankets/sleeping bags in one “warm room”
✅ Close doors, block drafts, roll towels at entry gaps

5/ 🔥 SAFE HEATING (CRITICAL)
If using any alternate heat source:
✅ Keep a fire extinguisher nearby
✅ Crack a window slightly
✅ Install/confirm CO detector batteries
Carbon monoxide is silent and deadly.

6/ ⚡ GENERATORS (NON-NEGOTIABLE RULE)
✅ Generator OUTSIDE ONLY
✅ 20+ feet from house
✅ Never in garage, basement, porch, or near open windows

✅ Drip faucets during hard freeze
✅ Open cabinets under sinks
✅ Know how to shut off water main
Frozen pipe bursts can destroy a home fast.

8/ 🚗 TRAVEL
🚫 Don’t drive unless it’s truly urgent
Ice doesn’t care about 4WD.
Most storm injuries happen on the roads (and from falls).

✅ Make a family plan: where to meet, who to call
