"Peter Fonda's 'The Hired Hand' (1971) was made during a very unusual creatively fertile time in Hollywood history. The success of 'Easy Rider' (1969) sort of busted everything wide open with the studios and they were taking chances on projects that would never see the light of day today. Some of the most adventurous of these films were made by Ned Tanen's production unit over at Universal and they were responsible for 'The Hired Hand'.

At one point, 'The Hired Hand' would have been called an anti-western, but genres as durable as the western are always sort of reinventing themselves. When the movie was made, there was something new in the air. It had to do with the counter-culture, with new attitude and sensibilities reacting against the old ones. And when you look at the film now, it seems more like a classic example of the genre. 'The Hired Hand' is partly a revenge story, but for me, what's more affecting about the film is the relationship between the wife and the husband. It's a very haunting relationship and it feels like something out of 19th century American Literature. Fonda, with his cinematographer, Vilmos Zsigmond and the actors, gives the picture quite an unusual tone; quite moody, impressionistic, autumnal. It's an extraordinarily delicate picture."
