American troops in the Middle East are being ordered to surrender their cellphones. Not because of some battlefield necessity, but because a raw video of an Iranian strike that killed two U.S. soldiers at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan dared to escape the regime's carefully curated propaganda machine. The footage circulated, the deaths became undeniable, and Donald Trump's authoritarian apparatus responded the only way it knows how: confiscate the evidence and silence the witnesses.

CENTCOM's commander admitted in a July 28 letter that troop videos were helping Iran assess its own damage. Translation: the regime cannot tolerate any independent record that contradicts the official story of strength and control. In Jordan the seizures are already underway. Families at home are left anxious and cut off, while the administration that thrives on lies continues its project of manufacturing consent through enforced ignorance.

This is not security. This is the classic authoritarian move: when reality embarrasses the strongman, punish the people who recorded it. Trump's regime has never been interested in informing the American people; it is committed to lying to them — about competence, about costs, about the consequences of its own posturing. Two dead service members become an inconvenience best managed by taking away the phones that might show the truth. The public is to receive only the approved narrative. Everything else is a threat to be neutralized.

When a government responds to inconvenient footage of its own failures by disarming its soldiers of their personal devices, it has abandoned any pretense of democratic accountability.
