American corporations, including the Tribune Company, used to offer defined benefit retirement plans. Pensions.
But pensions are expensive things to maintain. That’s why workers don’t have them anymore. 10/13

Cruel because employees at Tribune Content Agency are already critically underpaid. It would be particularly cruel to the employees who most need to save for retirement: those under age 40. 3/13

It would remove 3% of our compensation. In a world where stagnant wages are fighting against peaks of 9% inflation, our paychecks have stretched to the limit. To zero out the company’s 401(k) match would be cruel, cynical and antisocial. 2/13

Alden does not want to share even that minimal responsibility. An underfunded retirement is not only an employee’s problem – it’s society’s problem. Privatize the profits, externalize the negative consequences. That’s what it means to zero out a company 401(k) match. 12/13
