“The sheer volume and scope of proposed changes to these vital laws are completely at odds with Europe’s green ambitions and its climate action commitments” warned @AgnesCallamard

The Business and Human Rights team at @amnesty International has had another busy year.
These are some of the highlights of our work on corporate accountability in 2024.

Yet, the Leaders’ Declaration lacks clear commitments to increase funding for adaptation and loss & damage, and to ensure it is provided as grants, not loans. High income historical emitters must step up!
Every year, countries lose over US$1 BILLION a day to global #TaxAbuse. We need a fair #UNTaxConvention to fix this now and ensure all people can enjoy their human rights.
For the past nine days, countries at the @UN in NYC have been discussing Terms of Reference for a #UNTaxConvention - the mandate for the new #GlobalTaxRules
@amnesty insists that to be meaningful these Terms of Reference must link the #UNTaxConvention to other global commitments at the UN, including #HumanRights #Equality #EnvironmentalProtection #SDG
It is a critical time. Key provisions for the #UNTaxConvention Terms of Reference are under attack. States must not neglect their human rights obligations when reforming global tax. ToRs must be ambitious and retain #humanrights.
🚨Technology companies are setting a dangerous precedent by developing and hosting an app being used to report anti-government protesters in Venezuela.

Before the @DowNewsroom AGM on Thurs 11 April, @amnesty calls for Dow shareholders to consider withdrawing their investment if Dow doesn't meet its human rights responsibilities towards the 500,000+ people still suffering from the #Bhopal disaster

At @amnesty we have gathered new evidence of deadly unlawful attacks in the occupied #Gaza Strip, which demonstrates how Israeli forces continue to flout international humanitarian law, obliterating entire families with total impunity

New report alert! 📕 Very fitting as we wrap up #cop28 Harassment, unlawful surveillance and criminalization against Wet’suwet’en land defenders form part of an effort by the governments of Canada and BC to move forward the CGL pipeline on ancestral, unceded territory. 🇨🇦
Land defenders protecting Wet’suwet’en territory face criminal charges after defending the land from the construction of a pipeline they did not consent to. In our new report, we urge BC Attorney General @NikiSharma2 to drop the charges ⬇️

🚨 Instead of the fast and forever phase out of fossil fuel that science shows is vital, #COP28 is preparing a final text promoting the fossil fuel fairy tale that unproven technical solutions will somehow provide the answer to global warming.
This will effectively give fossil fuel companies a license to keep polluting, and tragically keep the world on a path towards further climate chaos and a human rights catastrophe ⬇️
We organized a big march on the #COP28UAE site to demand justice, reparation, cancellation of the financial debt, a halt to the use of fossil fuels, reparation for indigenous peoples and we asked the biggest polluters to think about the future of the planet @LossDamage
I came to #COP28 thinking that I’d watch 190 countries decide to at least phase-down fossil fuel production. Instead, the current draft deal only says that countries “can” reduce emissions by reducing consumption/production. We only have one day left! https://t.co/xBC3YJ8InP
Best summary of negotiations at #Cop28Dubai. This is why we need full, fast, fair and funded phase out of fossil fuels with a human rights-based approach to #ClimateFinance.
#OPEC says that “pressure against fossil fuels may reach a tipping point with irreversible consequences". Indeed, that’s why we need full, fast, fair and funded phase out of fossil fuels with a human rights-based approach to climate finance. #Cop28Dubai
#cop28 - in case you haven't seen the panicky letters send by #Opec over the proposed fossil fuel phase out, here's an example

It’s dangerous distraction day at #COP28 & the myth of “abated” fossil fuels is distraction #1, derailing the necessary full, fast, fair & funded phaseout of #FossilFuels. New research from Climate Analytics shows why relying on carbon capture spells climate catastrophe. 🧵👇🏾
Starting my first #Cop28Dubai , in Dubai this year! Looking forward to working with other @amnesty colleagues and partners from around the world and dig into the human rights responsibilities of businesses in the face of the #ClimateCrisis.
Best panel today! Rights-Based Climate Action for Business Enterprises session at #UNForumBHR: “We can’t build back better because business solutions that brought us here need to be reformed. We need to build back differently.” (Edited for brevity) #bizhumanrights#UNForum
"Employers still have workers in a headlock" an Embassy official told @amnesty in our new report on Qatar out today - one year on from the 2022 World Cup.
