I still remember the https://t.co/hActlNrhVe days, when DEC ruled search and the product was a good search engine with useful search operators, instead of all of us, and our data.

Google won me over in the early 2000s by being a better, faster version of Altavista.

Then Adwords / Adsense happened.

Just waiting for the inline viral ads to start overwhelming AI search results so I can relive it all over again.

Can't wait to hear ChatGPT and Gemini tell me why I might *think* AdBlock Plus is a pro move, but that I'm really missing out.

Local, open weight LLMs will only get more and more important. I wonder how the first major legislation against them will be crafted to achieve the widest impact?

Will it be:

A.) These LLMs are full of copyright violations and must be banned.

B.) They let bad actors create malware and must be banned.

C.) They teach people how to create X, Y, or Z, and must be banned.

All of these things will still be true for ChatGPT, Gemini, and the rest, but they'll have "verified protections against misuse" and (thanks to massive Ad revenues and monthly sub fees!) they will not be banned.

Decentralized ad free search should be a core internet protocol like NTP and DNS.

It would mitigate so many security nightmares around the paid gamification of search results and we could all focus on why Microsoft can't release working patches instead.
