Reclaiming South Sudan’s Rice Bowl
In partnership with @FAOUganda and South Sudan’s Ministry of Agriculture & Food Security, NARO is supporting efforts to revive Aweil’s historic status as South Sudan’s rice basket through quality seed production, farmer training and stronger local seed systems.
The ambition is significant: 397 tonnes of certified rice seed, projected to support production of up to 25,000 tonnes of rice grain.
Through @NaCRRI_Uganda, NARO is also strengthening local capacity in Good Agronomic Practices, soil & water management, seed inspection, certification and post-harvest handling
Today, @UNDP led by @NwanneObahor met with the new Minister of @MoLGUganda, Hon. @BalaamBarugahar, and Permanent Secretary Ben Kumumanya to reaffirm our longstanding partnership in advancing local development across Uganda. 🇺🇬
The discussions recognized progress made through the EU–UN Spotlight Initiative, digitalization of markets, promoting sustainable waste management, advancing rural development, and leveraging digital innovation to support local governments in enhancing service delivery including in hard to reach island communities.

The Director General of NARO, together with Director of Research Coordination Dr. Swidiq, Director of Research at @NARO_NaCRRI Dr. Titus, Director of Technology Promotion Dr. Kasim met with Prof. Jun-Ichi Sakagami of Kagoshima University, Japan.
Discussions centered on the Dream Rice Project, a collaborative initiative supported by @JicaUganda aimed at advancing Perennial Rice production in Uganda.
Beyond research, the project presents exciting opportunities for capacity building, including PhD and MSc fellowships, volunteer placements, short courses, and laboratory attachments to nurture the next generation of agricultural scientists.
🇺🇬🤝🇯🇵 The meeting also highlighted the strong academic ties between Uganda and Japan. Notably, Dr. Kisaka, NARO's Director of Corporate Services, undertook his PhD training in Japan, underscoring the enduring impact of international partnerships in building scientific excellence.
QUESTION!!
Could perennial rice be a game changer for Uganda's food security and climate resilience? And how can young Ugandan scientists leverage partnerships like these to shape the future of agriculture?
