1908: the Lancet, one of the most respected scientific journals, calls for 18 age limit on reading in bed amidst a moral panic surrounding children becoming "addicted" to novels, which were "designed to keep kids hooked" and destroy their attention/mental health
Good points here. Also remember the classic 1997 Frank Grimes episode where Grimes is mystified at how Homer can afford the house and Homer replies “Don’t ask me how the economy works” indicating the writers knew the house didn’t make sense for a guy like Homer.
Jeff Dean
Jeff Dean

There was no limit on the distance I could walk or bike when I was 10 years old, let alone 14 years old. School was 10 blocks away, and I walked to and from it every day. Downtown was more than a mile away, and I regularly rode my bike there. I'd ride my bike past the town limits when I was 10, miles from home.
Containing a 14 year-old boy within a block is nonsensical at the individual level, and at a societal level will have far-reaching and deeply deleterious implications when these boys become men.
The goal of every parent should be to raise children who, when they reach 18, have the practical experience and skillset to quickly become independent and fully functioning adults. I can't imagine that keeping teenagers from venturing alone more than a block from their home is going to help parents reliably achieve that goal.
Imagine you're a police officer raiding a gang's weapons cache. You expect to find AKs, pistols, explosives...maybe even an RPG.
Instead, you walk in and come face to face with a 12 ft long French BVRAAM worth nearly half a million euros 🫠
That's exactly what happened in 2019, when police in Pavia, northern Italy, busted a gang in possession of a Matra Super 530F. Not a mockup. Not a replica. An actual Matra 530 air-to-air missile. 🤯 1/2
It's remarkable how often LLMs will just regurgitate the common view from Reddit. AFAICT, no one really seems to see this as a looming knowledge crisis.
Unless you think relying on Reddit is OK, then LLMs desperately need to be fixed to stop doing that.
How much have politically-motivated selective demands for rigor taken over academia?
A pathological plagiarist and fabulist with no groundbreaking ideas or research in a fake field that exists only for progressive activism can be put on a rocket ship up through every level of academia, enabled by dozens of faculty, deans, chancellors, and peer reviewers at multiple institutions for over a decade, and appointed to a series of three professorships in quick succession, promoted by a willing and fawning media complex that forsakes all journalistic curiosity and skepticism to play their proper role, and then when caught, enjoys full-throated and utterly confident knee-jerk defenses by hundreds of academics whose greatest complaint is that anyone had the temerity to notice and who robotically reach for the one smear they think suffices to refute any criticism they dislike: calling you racist.
Think just for a moment what must be true about this culture to allow even this single case. And this is far from the only case where standards are lowered to the basement for the progessive cause. No conservative academic could or should be treated this way. He would have rightly been run out of the profession before getting a PhD and told to never come back. The rot is so thorough and expansive I don't know how you'd begin to convince all these people they've done something wrong, let alone get them to stop behaving this way when the next opportunity comes along to promote and sacralize an academic because of their politics and identity.
Part of the political economy of New York City is that rent-seeking interests mostly operate in ways that leave the Wall Street economic engine intact and just skim off the top.

@HackingLZ Until last year he could have gone the Maltese citizenship by investment route for a good portion of the money. Not worth it tbh. He'd be stuck there or risk extradition.
