The AP story is a gross misinterpretation of the facts. The reporters failed at basic fact-checking, even misspelling names, and weaponized standard administrative timelines to push a manufactured narrative about "restricted press access."

Let's be clear: Our Sailors willingly go into harm’s way and sacrifice their own personal freedoms to protect yours, including your freedom to ask these questions. Ensuring their safety and the privacy of their families is our absolute priority, and we make no apologies for protecting those who protect this nation. Here are the facts:

• There has been NO change to the Navy's policies governing the release of service records.

• To enhance the security of our Sailors and their families, Naval Administrative Message (NAVADMIN) 170/26 updated the policy for leadership biographies on public-facing websites—not service records.

•The Navy continues to review requests for service records on a case-by-case basis.

•Every single media request has been fulfilled since the NAVADMIN was issued.

We expect basic accuracy from the press, but sometimes that’s asking too much from a biased media. Do better, Fake News!
