@tech_for_future I see you're accounting for that later down, but the 18% renewable number is already using the substitution method, so people might use that as a baseline and substract fossil losses twice.
@tech_for_future Just making sure, it might be even worse. Those stats are using the "substitution method" which adjust for fossil heat losses. Real primary energy use is even higher. https://t.co/oy9H1fjWew

@heisenbergs696 Solution: Mandate that energy contracts guarantee a minimum amount of power at all times.
Energy companies have to buy standby backup matching the sum of their customers contracts.
And customers can choose what minimum they’re comfortable with.
@DirkLaurenz@NikSput Few are against renewables per se. It’s about what is going to firm renewables and how insane it is. Batteries requiring mountains of mining, much more use of copper, and new gas. (And if not, keep digging coal. You literally can’t close them.)
@DirkLaurenz@Freisprech1 Where are all these pro-coal people? In your head? Nobody except some die hard climate change deniers are pro fossil.
But as it stands, just renewables means backup, and that means fossil.
No new gas plants? ==> you will continue with coal, good intent or not. That’s reality.
@WinstonLennon1@chriopter And paradoxically, radioactive substances are the most visible of all harmful substances.
They announce themselves on an atomic level. Very useful when building safe containers and machines actually.
A cheap Geiger counter you buy online, and you have eyes.
@Warrior_242@chriopter Right, forgot that France is a radioactive wasteland. Oops, no, they have clean air, and nearly no emissions, and cheap power. High degree of electrification. And German coal releases FAR more radioactivity than them.
@markus_mall@chriopter That reactor type was built in a system that suppressed its dangers. They knew, but their authoritarian system wasn’t able to course correct. PWR reactors are much, much safer. The containment building alone is built to withstand any imaginable disaster.
@energy_charts_d@MarcoJunk Its fine as long as an existing energy system is there, built and ready to provide. But over time, it gets more and more expensive to replace firm power sources. And to decarbonize further fossil you and need to build NEW firm power.
The roguelike chess mashup @BelowTheCrown from @MisfitsAttic has launched into 1.0. I wrote a post about the design philosophy that has caused it to be so well regarded by players. Check it out while it's on sale!

@tech_for_future@UNIMOGd@DraconTV@energy_charts_d@thinkBTO Power contracts should be constructed with a guaranteed minimum capacity at any one time, since power * when needed * is quite important for most customers.
Those would quickly reveal the real value and also costs of R:E vs other things.
