More than thirty girls, some as young as twelve, were arrested at a protest in Georgia and locked in an abandoned Civil War stockade in the middle of nowhere.

No beds. One broken toilet. No working shower. Burgers thrown in once a day.

Their parents were not told where they were.
July 1963. Leesburg, Georgia.

They had marched in Americus. Police took them, drove them twenty miles away, and put them in a concrete building that had not been used for anything in years.

They slept on a concrete floor. The window had no glass. It was July in south Georgia.

They were held for up to forty-five days. No charges were ever filed against them. No trial. Nothing.

Their mothers were driving around the county asking anyone who would talk to them where the children were.

A SNCC photographer named Danny Lyon eventually found the building and photographed them through the broken window — girls in summer dresses, standing on filthy concrete, looking straight into the lens.

Those photographs got into Jet and into Congress. That is how the parents found them. That is the only reason they came home.

Some of them are alive right now. They call themselves the Stolen Girls.
