Effective, 30 Sep 2020, this account will be shut down. The City Clerk of Toronto refuses to recognize our Charter rights - time to take the City to court.
BREAKING — Green Party members have picked Toronto lawyer Annamie Paul as their next leader, bringing to a close the year-long race to replace Elizabeth May. #cdnpoli
@JoshMatlow Ranked choice only makes sense if there is a “none of the above” choice on the ballot - that is 2nd best option. Better? Proportional representation with optional municipal political parties. AND mandatory voting. Will bet real money @JoshMatlow will not support real democracy.
@MeryamHd2020 Left, right, and centre should be meaningless terms in the 21st century. To suggest that only one sliver of the political spectrum has the answers to the wicked challenges facings us ALL is simplistic and not even close to reality. Try some coherence and crowd wisdom.
@philomathein@dimitrilascaris When will the party, and this crop of leadership candidates, actively support municipal green parties (beyond the very few in BC)? When there are so many ridings with no EDA or real candidates, perhaps having municipal parties would help organise at the local level.
@Glen4Climate What Canada needs is a redefinition of what federalism is and should be in this country in the 21st century. Who does what needs to include municipalities - and they need to be recognised and protected in the constitution - federal or provincial. Your status quo is not working.
@FairVoteCanada@CPC_HQ@liberal_party How much weight should we give any illegitimate politician talking about democratic renewal or election reforms? In this case, a politician that 78.8% of the voters in their own riding DID NOT vote for? Even a freshly-minted leader of a party? Not very representative, methinks.
@meslin Mandatory voting. Done; solved the legitimacy problem ... that ALL politicians - insiders or outsiders, federal, provincial, and municipal - have. ALL of them. Oh, and proportional representation at city elections. For the bonus prize, which Canadian city used PR for 60+ years?
@macleans Canadians live in cities and yet municipalities are not recognised in the Constitution. There needs to more equitable relationships between our cities and the federal (and provincial) governments. Long past time for a new federalism in Canada. After all, it's 2020.
@macleans Is it time to start talking about a 21st-century federalism and the role of the provinces in our lives? Why are there inter-provincial trade barriers? Different rules for buying beer or wine? Different standards of care for the elderly? Different expectations for climate change.
@HarjitSajjan@CFSnowbirds Dumb. Really dumb. How do warplanes and fighter pilots "remind us to stick together"? They remind some of us to run for cover because bombs and bullets are coming. Save the fuel and the logistics costs and buy some PPE for those frontline workers.
@ErrolNazareth @jonrecord @superfan_nav @Food_Bank I'm not sure it's a contest or that anyone's contribution shoud be measured against anyone else's. As long as we are collectively looking after each other in whatever way we can, that would seem to be enough.
@jonrecord @superfan_nav@ErrolNazareth @Food_Bank No intention of being insensitive. Nav is a terrific person and should be lauded for his efforts. The hope was that everyday people would give of themselves without any thought of recognition or praise. Many of us do. Perhaps his efforts are what's needed for the rest.
@TorontoRivers@KHayhoe@ElizabethMay Saying there are no parties, of any political stripe, affiliation, or persuasion at the municipal order does not make it so. The Ontario Municipal Elections Act does not prevent them from existing - which would be unconstitutional - as they do in other provinces.
@LemonadebyLaura @KHayhoe That is true. But those fallen logs do not rise up, reborn. They die, rot, and provide the nutrients for new life. Hope and compassion and love are all good, necessary things for life. But it ends and need not be feared. It reminds us how precious the few moments we have are.
@KHayhoe@ElizabethMay Thank you for the gracious reply. All Green Parties (everywhere) are independent entities. Ms May led the federal party very ably but, as such, was not our former leader. As a municipal party, we have no concerns about a hard separation of church and state. Or recognizing fables.
