First look at the Pelican River Pack pups a few weeks ago (footage from July 11). Six of the pack's 7 pups were still alive, which is pretty good, but the really difficult part of summer—mid-August to September—when most pups die is still ahead. Will be interesting to see what happens.

In the shot of the entire pack, the collared wolf to the right is the father of the pups (Wolf W9C) and the adult wolf on the left is the mother. Getting observations of the parents and all their pups together in early July is not common for us so was exciting to capture to see (and it is great data too!).

• Sarah Clarke, Frey’s wife, worked for Hylden Advocacy & Law, a lobbying and legal outfit with deep roots in DFL (Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party) politics.

• Feeding Our Future, later exposed as a $250 million food-aid fraud (the largest in Minnesota history), was represented by Hylden’s firm in its civil standoff with the Minnesota Department of Education before the federal indictments.
