That’s a great spot. The bird in your photo is a Common Guillemot (also called Common Murre, Uria aalge).
How to tell:
Black/dark brown back and head with a clean white underside.
Slim, pointed bill, unlike auks or puffins with stubbier beaks.
Sits low in the water, giving that “torpedo-like” look.
They are members of the auk family (close relatives of puffins and razorbills).
Habitat and behaviour:
Common along Scottish coasts, especially cliffs and rocky shores.
They breed in dense colonies on sea cliffs, then spread out at sea outside the breeding season.
Excellent divers—can go down 30–60 meters for fish.
In Fife, you’ll often see them off the coast, especially around the Isle of May and other North Sea colonies.
The PPO blew up because the market had barely any momentum before, so the slow average got dragged down to almost zero. Then suddenly yesterday we saw a solid push—more stocks hitting highs than lows. That kicked the fast average up.
PPO compares that fast average to the slow one. So if the slow average is tiny, even a modest move in the fast one looks massive. It’s like jumping from $1 to $2—it’s just a buck, but that’s a 100% move.
So yeah, it tells us the mood flipped fast. But the size of the spike? Probably more about the math than the move. Good to know, but don’t get hypnotized by the number.
