curious infosec guy, red teamer, incident responder, pentester, appsec consultant, former software engineer, troubleshooter | I do not speak for my employer
Kevin will be sorely missed. I don’t even know what to type here other than this last year was extremely tough for him but he fought everyday and we all knew Kevin was a fighter and had hope he would beat it because he was that incredible of a person. I remember the day he found out the news, he called me and was terrified of the diagnoses. My heart dropped, but this was Kevin - he could do anything and I knew he would fight this until the very end.
He didn’t want to share with many and we kept it close to chest as Kevin fought this for a year.
Not many people know “Kev” personally or who he was as a person. He was kind, compassionate, and an amazing human being. I’ll always remember the first time I “met” him - he sent me an email saying dude love your social engineer toolkit it’s awesome and from there we started to forge a close friendship.
I owe many career highlights and where I am today to Kev. My first interview on national news, pushing me to start TrustedSec, and selflessly having my best interest always at heart. If I ever needed anything - regardless of how busy he was he always had time for me.
I was fortunate to see him recently after he was released from the hospital for his main surgery to try and stop the spread of the cancer. He was energetic, hopeful, and full of life. How I’ll always remember him. I had no idea it would be my last time seeing him and he would so quickly take a turn for the worse.
His wife Kimberly is such an amazing human being and was the strength for him when he was the weakest. She was his strength, I know their child will hear all of the stories of how awesome of a Dad he was.
Kevin forged this industry for the better, I looked up to him when I was in school, in the military, and through my career. I’ve met some of my heroes in this industry and most fall short of who I thought they would be.
@kevinmitnick never fell short and instead was far beyond what I ever imagined him to be. He was someone I will always remember being a friend, mentor, and someone I will always look up to as the reason for much of my success today.
We miss you dude, you pioneered an industry, helped others, and made me a better person. I know we’ll meet again someday.
