Positive impact for new, low-view channels.
Viewers are much more likely to click on a video with 1,000 views than one with 50.
At least until people adjust. After years of using view count as a proxy for quality, that threshold will likely increase.
After marinating on this for a day I think I keep getting more and more sour on this and see no upside for users and creators, only those making press releases.
Clicking on a thumbnail already counted as a view.
Now it's a question of how many views from autoplay on scroll or hover
We're gonna need a new term for this
Scrolflation ?
The YouTube algorithm will still use engaged views so hopefully the outlier logic holds.
This appears to just be cosmetic and reputational to stop creators thinking they are getting more views on other platforms.
I wonder how this will effect how creators & strategist look at outlier videos as a strategy, since now even just the little preview that plays when you hover video will count as a โviewโ and videos before this change will not be retroactively.
Especially since theyโve given some creators a beta feature called โResearchโ that will show you outlier videos directly on YouTube studio and you donโt have to use a 3rd party website
Year over year, more quality content competes for the same pool of attention, naturally diluting views and making it harder for established creators to maintain the same numbers.
The new metric feels like a bandaid for that dilution, while also giving newer channels a better chance to break out.
It's fascinating how unbelievably stupid this change is. Who does this benefit? This doesn't help any creator, this inflates views, is it so YouTube can say "wow we've had 1 trillion views in the last month"? Who do they need to brag to? It's fucking YOUTUBE!
Requesting a toggle to bring back engaged views on YouTube:
Avatar โ Appearance โ Engaged Views Toggle
While weโre at it, add toggles to show dislikes and disable Shorts entirely - plus an easy way to report AI-generated content.
Yes, this will provide a unique opportunity for small creators to stand out on YouTube.
Low view videos (<1,000 views) are often overlooked and never given a true chance.
People have a hardwired concept, built up over years, of what a video's view count says about its quality and whether it's worth clicking on.
That will change within a few weeks as people adjust to the new counting method after August 24th.
@PopBase For creators struggling to share the original view count with brands on existing/pending CPM deals - we can help by making this data available to them.
@zachbussey Creators stuck in any pending CPM deals can contact us to help them let brands access the original view count metric via our platform following August 24th.
Looks like YouTube CPM based brand deal pricing will break post-8/24, itโll take some time for the sponsorship market to adjust.
For creators stuck in pending CPM deals, weโve made a free feature that exposes the original view count metric to brands going forward, so existing deals can still be honored.
The algorithm should still have engaged views and watch time signals to optimize around, so hopefully our feeds won't get destroyed.
For the brand deal side - we imagine CPM deals will come down significantly after 8/24 as the market adjusts to the new view definition.
Until then, weโre making our engaged views feature free.
Engaged views will essentially show what current view counts show today, so brands and creators can see true engaged views and evaluate deals against prior expectations.
YouTube just broke brand deal CPMs as we know them.
Starting 8/24, a public view counts from the first frame or autoplay - even if someone immediately scrolls away.
1M public views โ 1M engaged views. Public CPMs are now a broken metric for pricing deals.
Sponsorly is fixing this gap.
We put a creator's verified engaged views directly on their profile, instantly accessible to brands, for free.
Creators can use that data to defend their rates or let sponsors browse and bid directly on their upcoming videos.
