My point is that I understand when #India doesn't name the perpetrator when it condemns the Israeli bombing of Qatar. I understand when India doesn't name when it condemns the Russian attacks in Ukraine. I also understand if India doesn't want to name when it condemns the Iranian attack on Persian Gulf monarchies. That's strategic balancing. But I don't understand why India doesn't name the country that fired missiles at vessels carrying Indian nationals, and killed three of them, in India's neighbourhood waters!

One of the greatest blunders in Tamil history was the conflict between Sundara Pandyan and Veera Pandyan. When Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan was not given the crown by his father, who favoured his brother Veera Pandyan instead, Sundara Pandyan turned against his own brother and began a bitter struggle to usurp the throne.

This happened at a time when the gravest danger was already gathering on the borders. Malik Kafur, the general of Alauddin Khalji, was waiting for an opportunity to march south, plunder the wealthy temples and kingdoms of Tamilakam, and extend the power of the Delhi Sultanate.

Unfortunately, driven by ambition and political desperation, Sundara Pandyan invited Malik Kafur to intervene against his own brother. But once Malik Kafur entered Tamilakam, he did not come merely as an ally. After defeating Veera Pandyan, he turned against Sundara Pandyan as well, leaving both claimants weakened and humiliated.

The consequence was disastrous. The Pandya civil war opened the gates for a devastating northern invasion, leading to the plunder of Tamil country, the weakening of its great temples, and a severe blow to the Dharmic and cultural order that had flourished for centuries

The departure of the charismatic @annamalai_k from @BJP4India is a real blow to the party in Tamil Nadu. For the first time in Tamil Nadu’s politics, he was the only rank outsider, neither from a political dynasty nor a movie star to attract huge audiences who treated him like a star, rushing to hear and interact with him.
He had the makings of a latter day Kamaraj or GK Moopanar who could have possibly unveiled a new brand of nationalistic politics in our state. In a state strongly anchored to the political values of the Dravidian movement, it is challenging to develop an alternate vision of politics. But Annamalai had it in him to do that.
He had the potential to inspire people to rally around a vision of Tamil Nadu proud of its own unique cultural heritage but also embracing its shared inheritance of India’s civilisational history.
The BJP’s loss is possibly Tamil Nadu’s gain as another modern young leader steps into the ring, rivalling only Chief Minister @TVKVijayHQ who is currently unassailable.

@tskrishnan Excellent information. I was in Lothal in March 2026, watching the excavation under way there after a gap of about 60 years. It should be called the Harappan Civilisation and not the Sindhu-Saraswati Civilisation. Even the term the Indus Valley Civilisation is not being used.

I am happy to break it to you. The Sindhu–Saraswathi civilisation shows remarkable cultural continuity with later Vedic traditions and even with many practices that survive in India today. Here is one striking example.

The Archaeological Survey of India excavation report at Lothal by S. R. Rao notes the presence of several fire altars, both in private houses and in public spaces.

The report categorically observes that these structures could not have been ordinary ovens, since they lacked openings for supplying fuel and also possessed a distinct ritualistic design. Further, terracotta ladles were found near the altars, which were likely used for pouring offerings such as ghee into the sacred fire.

The fire altars discovered at Lothal closely resemble the descriptions of Yajna Kuṇḍas found in Vedic literature. Vedic scriptures describe the Āhavanīya Kuṇḍa as rectangular in shape, where oblations are offered to the Devas through the sacred fire. The Gārhapatya Kuṇḍa, on the other hand, is described as circular, with the sacred fire preserved continuously day and night.

Interestingly, similar features are seen in the excavated structures at Lothal, particularly within private houses, where both rectangular and circular fire altars have been identified. The associated finds includes terracotta ladles and ritual layouts.

The picture below shows a modern-day construction of a similar Vedic fire altar tradition that continues even today.

Today is the Guru Pooja of the great Saiva saint Thirugnanasambandar, who played a pivotal role in rejuvenating the Saiva sampradaya in Tamilakam, especially in Pandya Nadu. Sekkizhar praises Sambandar by stating that he was born so that the Vedic path may flourish and Saivism may shine in glory:

“வேத நெறி தழைத்தோங்க மிகு சைவத் துறை விளங்க”

There is also an interesting inscription connected to his birthplace, Sirkazhi. The inscription, belonging to the reign of Kulothunga Chola III, records that a female palace cook named Uyyavanthan Rajavichchadhari commissioned a Vigraha of “Aludaiyapillai” (Thirugnanasambandar) at the Sri Kalahasti Temple and also endowed lands for offerings and daily rituals.

What makes this especially remarkable is that a woman from Sirkazhi made donations to a temple situated far away in Kalahasti, along with permanent land grants for worship. It beautifully illustrates how Saivam spiritually connected distant regions through devotion and temple networks.
