A coffee shop opening at 10 a.m. feels fundamentally wrong. By 10, I’ve already had coffee, contemplated life, and answered emails. Coffee shops should be open at the crack of dawn. We’re losing the plot.
Love this. Juan Hernandez immigrates to the US, learns how to weld because it pays well, begins contracting at SpaceX, gets full time role + $10,000 equity.
It’s now worth just under a million dollars.
The government running the 5th wealthiest city on earth can’t tabulate a simple vote in the year 2026 in less than a week. But yes, everything is functioning exactly as intended. No change needed. Nothing to see here.
Officially 1 month since I switched to a flip phone.
- Everyone is more severely addicted to their smartphones than I thought. Once you have a dumbphone, you'll frequently find yourself as the only person in the room not on their phone. It's not just teenagers, it's parents and adults of all ages. It's like everyone is stuck in a trance. 75+ year olds might be the only exception.
- All the objections I previously had for getting a dumbphone have turned out to be overblown and/or solvable. My iPhone addiction had fed my brain excuses to not do this earlier. If you really want to make the switch, you can.
- I've felt embarrassed to pull out my flip phone in public at times, for fear of being different or drawing too much attention to myself. But I have learned to just own up to it. Most people end up saying something like "Oh, I probably should do that too."
- I am using my brain more. Even though my flip phone has Waze, I find myself memorizing maps and roads. I'm more bored and get lost in my thoughts. I'm using paper and pen more. Increased desire for tangible things > digital things.
Overall, it has been a great experience and I plan on never going back.
If you don't vote, I don't want to hear you ever complain about any of the filth, crime, or decline in LA again. Get off your butt and VOTE, or enjoy what you get.
almost every city in the country now sits atop a system in which a minority of highly-productive young people are expected to work away their best years around the clock, just to cover rent, while giving away half their income to crazy people, criminals, and bureaucrats.
I will believe AI is driving productivity gains in the old economy when a front desk person checks me into a hotel with less than fifteen hundred keystrokes and mouse clicks.
Not a single day should go by that you're not grateful for those that gave their life for your freedom. Everyday should be Memorial Day. God bless all of you please be safe today. 🇺🇸
If legislators always vote with the President, we have a king.
If legislators always vote with the prevailing wind, we have mob rule.
If legislators always vote with the Constitution, we have a Republic.
Me: Hey, can you print this black and white document?
Printer: I am offline.
Me: No, you are not. Can you please just print this black and white document?
Printer: With my MAGENTA low??? Bro, you sound insane right now.
The problem with LA is the "Everything's Fine" people. These are people that came to LA after its heyday and during its decline after the financial crash of 2008. The more recent the transplant, the less they are aware of what Los Angeles used to be. They have no idea all the areas that used to be lively, or that there was a world class music and night life scene. If you mention there weren't homeless people shitting on the streets everywhere, they call you a MAGA fascist because unhoused people have rights too and Everything's Fine. If you mention entire neighborhoods like the Pacific Palisades did not burn down, they say you should not be blaming the mayor for the weather (which is controlled by global warming Republicans) and Everything's Fine. You can say it's really not normal for so many shops to be closed all over Los Angeles with empty storefronts, and they'll say something about equity and that Everything's Fine. The street vendors on sidewalks in front of KoreaTown restaurants that are shutting down? That's totally fine because that's LA culture (no it fucking isn't newbie). Crime? Everything's Fine. These theater kid transplants from Michigan say why are you complaining, move somewhere else. They don't know what they don't know.
Then they drink a $20 Erewhon smoothie thinking that's the height of LA culture. Everything's Fine.
Explain to me why our electric bills never decrease, even though we have swapped to all LED lights, energy star appliances, built massive solar and wind farms.
It’s absolutely wild to me that the existence of self driving cars is somehow still a news story 3 years after they have been our everyday existence in San Francisco
Are we actually living through the most chaotic era in human history, or are we just the first generation with social media forced to watch every tragedy on earth unfold in real time, and the world has always been this dark, we were just never close enough to see it?
