Because it essentially acts as a permanent government claim on your property. You're essentially renting your property (that's getting taxed) from the government. A tiered VAT is much better if a tax must be imposed. At least that's semi-voluntary as you can choose not to buy/consume taxable goods. Also, no one is arguing against getting rid of income taxes here.
