Today, the Prime Minister has announced more investment in weapons of mass destruction.

The UK spends £12,000 every minute on nuclear weapons. Imagine if we spent that money on social care, schools and the NHS instead.

More preventive healthcare means less (extremely profitable) industrial healthcare.

This may be true if “technology” is not reduced to mechanistic human-made technologies. In most cases, the living and organic technologies of nature are more efficient (in the long run) and sustainable.

We make movies about saving the world as the real world hurtles toward ecological collapse.

We make movies about defeating diabolical villains while letting the real diabolical villains rule the world.

We make movies celebrating heroic acts while real heroes are imprisoned.

Somehow fighting the bad guys and saving the planet only ever stays in movie land. We are handed fictional triumphs in lieu of real victory.

And the problem is that far too many of us are content with this. Give us bread made by PepsiCo and circuses starring Robert Downey Jr, and that's good enough for us.

We can't keep doing this. We need to find our true heroism. Our world is in peril, and we can't let its rescue remain a decorative flicker on the silver screen.

La Grande-Bretagne se vide littéralement de ses métaux précieux. Pour sauver la balance commerciale, des marchands britanniques mettent au point une stratégie machiavélique.

À leur tête, William Jardine. Un respectable homme d'affaires écossais, mais surtout le premier grand baron de la drogue de l'Histoire moderne.

Si les Chinois ne veulent rien acheter, Jardine et la Compagnie des Indes vont leur vendre un produit dont ils ne pourront plus se passer.

Le plan est d'un cynisme absolu et fonctionne à la perfection. On inonde le pays d'opium.

Des millions de Chinois deviennent toxicomanes. Le flux financier s'inverse. L'argent pur quitte la Chine pour remplir les coffres de Londres.

La faillite britannique est évitée grâce à un trafic de stupéfiants d'État.

Mais en 1839, l'empereur Daoguang décide d'arrêter le massacre. Il envoie à Canton un haut fonctionnaire totalement incorruptible : Lin Zexu.

Lin Zexu ne négocie pas avec les cartels. Il fait encercler les entrepôts étrangers et détruit plus de 1 000 tonnes d'opium de contrebande sur la plage.

En temps normal, c'est une simple saisie douanière.

Mais William Jardine rentre à Londres et va murmurer à l'oreille du ministre des Affaires étrangères, Lord Palmerston.

Quand le chef du cartel finance les campagnes politiques et possède la Royal Navy, la saisie devient un casus belli. Lord Palmerston déclare la guerre à la Chine.

Pas pour défendre le droit international. Pour protéger les marges de ses trafiquants.

Les navires de guerre de Sa Majesté bombardent les côtes et massacrent les défenses chinoises avec une brutalité inouïe. La Chine capitule.

Le traité de paix qui suit est un pur contrat d'extorsion.

La Chine est forcée de rembourser au centime près la valeur de la drogue détruite, d'ouvrir ses ports et de céder une petite île pour faciliter la logistique des contrebandiers : Hong Kong.

Dans les livres d'Histoire, on appelle pudiquement cela l'ouverture au libre-échange.

La réalité est beaucoup plus crue.

Une nation souveraine a été mise à feu et à sang par le gouvernement de la reine Victoria, prêt à tout pour écouler sa came et sauver son économie.

Where the country that funded Saddam Hussein's chemical weapons program in the 1980s launched a war in 2003 to remove Saddam Hussein for having chemical weapons.

Where the country that armed, trained, and created the conditions for the Taliban spent twenty years fighting the Taliban.

I am not asking you to hate America.

I am asking you to read the sentences above without looking away, and then tell me, with a straight face, that the question is whether to believe them.

The single biggest delusion, false belief, in mainstream politics and economics, is that somehow the climate and ecological emergency, is just another issue, which can be set aside when considering other issues.

Rather the ecological polycrisis will determine everything, economic and societal. There are no issues independent of it. It determines everything that is going to happen in our societies in the near future.

You might not like this, you might have other supposed opinions, but there is only one reality that determines life on Earth, including human life, and that is ecological reality.

Everything else, is denial, delusion and misunderstanding. Being in denial of the climate and ecological poly crisis, is like being in denial that you have a serious illness, which is getting much worse. You can carry on denying it for a while, but reality will eventually catch up with you.

Just like the reality of the climate and ecological emergency is starting to catch up with us. Denial of reality, is a short term, time limited strategy, that always ends in tears.

Unfortunately, the USA is not the only society that has ended up at this miserable point.
