@Jeukendrup The link although very useful mention lactic acid many times. Surely this is incorrect and needs reviewing as we know 'lactic acid' is not a thing, it is in fact lactate which is the mandatory by product of glycolisis and is recycled and used as fuel
@niko_schr As long as you are not neglecting the longer easy runs in that first period it's fine. It's too late in the last 12 weeks to build endurance, it needs to be in the bank already going into the last block which is all about specificity π
@Alan_Couzens That paper is from 1983 Alan, do you think it is still relevant as it seems to contradict the intensity that Inigo San Milan quotes which is quite considerably higher than 50% Vo2 to optimise maximum mitochondria production?
@altini_marco Great read. I always explain to my athletes the range of paces within easy as you mention. So if running 6 days a week then the day after a session would be that very easy zone 1 and the middle days more moderate in lower or upper Z2 up to around LT1 which is very productive.
@TimW031 @Alan_Couzens@brady_h@feelthebyrn1 Really works in terms of what,? If all you ever do is zone1 recovery jogging, where is the stimulus required for adaptation and improvement
@roulidor @tomprimozic@Alan_Couzens That's a great chart, thanks for sharing, the only question I have is re the heart rate data where LT1 is shown at around 70% here, I was under the impression that the rwnge was more around 78-82% depending on the level of the athlete, thanks
@JohnHellemans I agree, base is something you do throughout your running career and whilst Vo2 can max out quite early, RE and threshold can continue to improve for many more years
@Barefoot_Bert@Wilder_way@BrianAllenDC@Alan_Couzens@OyvindSandbakk Depends on weekly volume and intensity. When running twice a day and 100mpw, a lot of morning runs were easy z1, now I'm older and on 50mpw and less intensity, less recovery z1 needed and more z2 each week.
@firmfitness99 Agree with some of those and good points. Marathon runners I coach will generally do a 5k pace session a week and a 3-5m tempo effort within a run (88-90% mhr) at around 1 hour race pace. The rest is easy to moderate
@BrianAllenDC@Barefoot_Bert@Alan_Couzens@OyvindSandbakk To me zone 1 is easy recovery jogging and very little if any training stimulus. It is zone 2 which is still in the easy domain and below LT1 so around 70-80% mhr that is the productive range, more moderate to steady than easy in reality.
