This has no basis in reality, itโs just Savodnik writing fan fiction
AES is to the right of every DSA candidate running for Congress, and even to the right of Bernie. Heโs a very standard progressive lib, whose most likely to go mainstream among the left candidates this year
@EMIAGPOS@ok_post_guy@MappingFL@Edugarzam@MissNicoletta There's very few Dems that are "GOP-lite" anymore. Congressional democrats atm are the most progressive they've ever been due to the country's polarization. We have 10 blue dogs not 50 unlike in 2009.
@panadolprincess@MissesDread Another good aspect of the democrats' economic policy is that they're very pro-anti-trust. It's good to facilitate competitive markets & hopefully prevent monopolization. The reason why people think the dems' politics aren't enough is frankly because of the senate filibuster
@rowanfornow Doesn't that show you that there's a public opinion problem that you can't just outrun by scolding? You actually have to persuade people to not be transphobic (yes, it sucks, I agree, as a pro-trans person, but that's the reality of the situation)
@ToniSmalloni@neoliberal_hack@secantsegment I don't understand what the point of this response is when I have said multiple times that it's fine if not necessary to criticize him for these ads? Red states are bleak on trans rights polling and if you want to win as a dem there you need to win indies by very large margins
@ImNotOwned@FrankHamilktcc These people have no theory of change. Every successful liberation movement understands that fighting injustice is in itself an injustice. If you refuse to acknowledge the grim reality, you erase your ability to intelligently and effectively contest the status quo.
@ToniSmalloni@neoliberal_hack@secantsegment Because blue state and swing state democrats have 0 incentive to do what Turek did; they don't have to win as many independents as Turek does in a red state like Iowa. Turek is also most likely lying; he has a pro-trans voting record in the Iowa legislature.
@ToniSmalloni@neoliberal_hack@secantsegment Because fighting injustice is hard and unfair, meanwhile a democratic majority in Congress is guaranteed to protect and strengthen trans rights, & I don't oppose any pressure from trans activists to guarantee that remains the case. But I draw the line at rooting for Turek to lose
Political parties have formed more significant alliances across borders in recent years, however.
Plus, I like watching elections I don't have a direct stake in.
@ToniSmalloni@neoliberal_hack@secantsegment If you want Turek to lose, or if you try to make Turek lose then I have a big issue. If you're just criticizing him, then I have no problem with you. If you want him to win and are criticizing him and will continue to do so if he's elected, then we don't disagree on anything
@MappingFL@ok_post_guy@Edugarzam@EMIAGPOS@MissNicoletta Doesn't mean you should root for him to lose? You can criticize, you can threaten to field a primary challenge in 2032. You can make it clear that he absolutely cannot vote for anti-trans legislation. You can work to influence public opinion.
@ToniSmalloni@neoliberal_hack@secantsegment But putting in the work to influence public opinion is VERY important. Red state democrats wouldn't need to compromise if public opinion was on their side. Turek's compromising because he's getting attacked on his pro-trans record in the Iowa legislature.
@ToniSmalloni@neoliberal_hack@secantsegment There are other accountability-bringing measures other than tanking the fucking general election and allowing a person, Hinson, to win who will NEVER listen to you on trans rights. If you want to protect trans rights, a democratic-controlled Congress is a must
@ToniSmalloni@neoliberal_hack@secantsegment Black rights were famously not achieved overnight. The Civil Rights Act came at the height of a political movement that was able to influence public opinion enough to the point that granting civil rights was no longer seen as a political suicide for politicians in power
