Despite being very low, the minimum guaranteed compensation is a lifeline for many projects. If this is abolished, the way forward for these installations is either by participating in the internal/national market, or direct participation in EU (e.g. EPEX SPOT, HUPX) markets.
US ambassador to Serbia, Christopher Hill, said today that people protesting lithium mining are against Serbia’s path to the EU and integration with the West. According to him, opponents of lithium mining are 'pro-Russian.'
His statement is factually incorrect — many people protesting lithium mining are in favor of Serbia joining the EU and are attempting to ensure EU-level environmental protections in Serbia. Calling people who are concerned with having drinking water and a clean environment Kremlin agents is ridiculous.
More importantly, his statement is deeply anti-democratic. It ignores the fact that 60% of Serbia’s population is opposed to lithium mining and that the people of Serbia have expressed this over and over again for several years through various democratic processes.
The running joke in Serbia these days is that the governing Vučić administration is merely a group of lobbyists on Rio Tinto’s payroll. Indeed, as infrastructure in the country falls apart, they have done little other than promote lithium mining for the last several months. For Christopher Hill to cheer that team on is not surprising.
P.P.P.S. There is even an option for any citizen of Serbia to "report an eco-terrorist" via a button. They are literally drawing targets on people's heads and publishing personal data including photos of my friends and details on every one of them.
