my mom just visited Austin and said it felt like the future, captivated by the sheer abundance that surrounded her. The simple things that I take for granted now.
The airport, the quantity of quality restaurants, the cyber cabs & Waymos, the amount of teslas & rivians, all of the new buildings & skyline, highways, academic institutions, public spaces, eclectic people, and so on.
we drove to the San Marcos outlets and she couldn't believe that we had a pottery barn, and on the way to that pottery barn she was impressed with the sheer amount of fast food chains and random businesses that line the I-35 corridor down to San Antonio. To people from Austin, that corridor feels polluted with nonsense, but to her it was abundance.
She asked
"do you have a Trader Joe's?" Of course
"How close is the Whole Foods" we have central market, which is closer and better
"I can't believe you have an In n Out" we have that + P Terrys + Shake Shack + [insert 100 other burger options]
I'm from a small farm town in central Illinois. ~3k people. We had a mall, but nothing was really in the mall, even less so now. We had a Buffalo Wild Wings and a Steak 'n Shake that we would go to after football games. People would come to school with a truck bed full of dead coyotes that they shot from the gravel road. Normal Tuesday. You had to drive 20 minutes to get to Starbucks.
Where I'm from, there was not much but grain bins and fields. It is vintage America.
Over the past decade the place I am from has been hallowed out even more. All of the big corporations that employed the towns smartest and most ambitious people have picked up and left. The taxes, beuracracy, and grift (study Rod blagojevich and JD Pritzker) have forced executives to leave for Texas, Tennessee, Florida.
The local economies have been decimated. Many businesses that support these corporations have gone under, forced to leave, or they never existed in the first place.
There is no Whole Foods, there is no in n out, there is no pottery barn, there are definitely no self driving cars. there is no economy, no abundance.
What is going on in the world right now, primarily Europe, Brazil, and other "progressive" places like Illinois, California, and New York is shocking. These places are hallowing themselves out, and it is intentional. The beaurcrats and grifters are squeezing out every last penny
The welfare state has ballooned to uncontrollable levels, in extreme cases like the UK and France its surpassed tax revenues. Everyone gets free shit, but for now long? And most importantly who is paying for it?
the prevailing enemy that most are blaming is wrong. It's not the capitalists that are to blame. It's not the dudes who get up every morning to create wildly ambitious technologies that employ thousands of other ambitious people That requires the coordination of thousands of disparate actors to supply capital, talent, resources, labor, logistics, and ideas to create things for the rest of us to use. To create abundance.
No, it's not the capitalists at all. It's the bureaucrats that leach, take, steal, and redistribute. That deprive the ambitious of opportunities to maximize their potential to create. Its those constituents who want to "seize the means of production." It's the entitled who believe that your output is their gain.
Creation is the most egalitarian act. When we all create we all benefit. Creation is within all of us, it's what make humans unique, it's our duty to protect the privilege to do it.
Have a blessed day
