Panel title of the year, and I am on it:
"Your Data Is Six Weeks Too Late: Getting Real-Time Answers from PIMS, HR, Finance, and Marketing Systems"
Six weeks late is not a reporting problem. It is what happens when none of your systems will hand anything to any of the others.
VetForum USA, Dallas. Thursday Sept 17, 10:20.
I would much rather adopt than author.
Originality is the tell that somebody is solving the wrong problem. The first veterinary implementation guide worth anything will be a profile of something that already exists, not an original work.
Every major version of a standard should be required to remove something.
Not minimalism. A defense against the failure mode that gets standards after they succeed.
Two free moves that de-risk a software switch more than anything else:
Request your full export from your current vendor BEFORE you sign anything.
Count the test migrations in the project plan. If there is one, ask for two.
Your vendor says 60 days to switch. Plan on 5 to 7 months for a small practice.
Both numbers are honest. They are measuring different clocks.
New video walks the whole timeline.
ChatGPT Work can now use its computer and browser to sign in to websites on web and mobile, without ChatGPT ever seeing your username or password.
That means you can ask it to:
β’ Set up utilities for a new apartment
β’ Book a DMV or passport appointment
β’ Check reimbursement costs through your insurance
β’ Find and book an in-network doctor around your availability
β’ Check when your car registration expires and prepare the renewal paperwork
β’ Compare your rental insurance policy with an issue youβre emailing your landlord about
β’ Find and save apartment listings that match your criteria
β’ Restock something just by uploading a photo
β’ Schedule a package pickup for a return
β’ Cancel tickets for a rescheduled trip
β’ Book a vet appointment
β’ Submit reimbursement paperwork for medical treatments
β’ Check resale sites for new drops and save things you might like
β’ Find candidates with specific experience and draft outreach
β’ Take invoices from your email and submit them to your accounting software
β’ Draft replies to rental property inquiries
β’ Fill out permit applications for your small business
β’ Add action items to a vendor portal based on a recent client call
β’ Analyze the latest ad campaign for your small business
The best email I got this month was a reader asking why I would write a data model when FHIR exists.
He was right. Everything I had drafted was already a FHIR resource.
The missing part in vet med was never the model. It was a test that can fail a product.
New issue of The Veterinary Software Insider: I set out to write the veterinary data payload, and a reader talked me out of it in the best possible way.
Not a new model. A profile, a test, and somebody to hold the pen.
Scope criterion that works: can a two developer vendor finish v1 this quarter?
Scope criterion that does not: is this field important?
Everything is important to somebody. That is the whole problem.
Completeness is what kills standards.
The complete document is a historical artifact. The stripped down subset that shipped is running under your login right now.
Standing offer: if you run a purchasing group, practice alliance, or association with a commercial arm, I will write and publish a model software vendor addendum, open license, free, and I will take no money from any vendor who accepts it.
Ask.
Group purchasing organizations in vet med negotiate hard on gloves, drugs, and equipment.
Almost none of them have ever negotiated a software term.
Software gets treated as an individual decision.
That is a habit, not a law.
Watch for this quietly happening in a pricing page revision: structured export and full API access moving to a tier a three-doctor practice cannot reach.
That is the fork in the road for data portability in this industry.
A floor built by a private purchaser belongs to the private purchaser.
It applies while they care, it is enforced by its own beneficiary, and it can decay without an announcement.
Take it anyway.
Just do not call it a standard.

Contract clause that means nothing: "customer data will be provided upon termination."
Contract clause that means something: named format, coded diagnoses, lab values as values, attachments included, delivered in N days, at $X, tested annually.
Nobody maintains two products.
That single fact is the whole reason an independent practice might get a clean data export it never had the leverage to ask for.
