We first met Virginia at a community center to film her introduction video. Quickly into the session we learned Virginia is a mother of a 3rd grader in the district — and we certainly get the impression that improving the school district isn’t just an abstract idea or stepping stone for Virginia — it’s very personal and clear she’s vested in better student outcomes. Between filming, Virginia brings warmth and compassion, as she shared her first-hand experiences in the district as well as insights from her professional background in education. Given the significant budgetary challenges the School district has, we appreciate Virginia’s background in education, her first-hand experiences with the district and her compassion, as we believe that while fiscal responsibility is indeed necessary, we must be careful not to see children and their education and their education, as line items.

Is it because of limited staff capacity? Why are schools considered underenrolled if there is adequate demand but capped? The problem seems to be a moving target and we keep trying to solve the symptoms, not the root cause.

@urbanistvc @SFParents We need to fix teacher hiring and retention. Good teachers will attract and retain students and parents. Schools are under enrolled because there are not enough teachers. Fix payroll, fix hiring and onboarding, provide affordable housing and child care.
