A big joint venture (JV) led by Shipping Corporation of India (SCI). The JV includes oil giants like Indian Oil (needs 4 ships), BPCL (2 ships), HPCL (2 ships), and others like ONGC.
Why now? India imports a lot of LPG. Owning these ships will make transport cheaper and more reliable for our energy needs.
This is actually part of an even bigger plan - the same JV wants to buy 59 ships total over the next 5 years with ₹15,000 crore investment. These 8 VLGCs are just the first batch.
8 Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs). Each one can hold 88,000 cubic metres of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), think of it as giant floating tanks for cooking gas and industrial fuel.
Total cost - About $1 billion (roughly ₹8,300 crore).
Who needs the ships?
The two ships built abroad must be done by a yard that has already delivered at least three VLGCs in the last five years. The six ships made in India will use full technology help from these Korean giants.
Indian shipyards have never built even one VLGC before. These are high-tech, specialised ships, not simple cargo boats. South Korea builds almost all of them globally. So this bid is India’s first real try at cracking this club.
Normally, Indian yards lose out because their costs are higher. But the government just approved a massive ₹69,725 crore package last September (2025) to fix exactly that problem.
It includes direct money help, cheap loans, and rewards for building in India. The goal? Make India one of the top 10 shipbuilding nations by 2030 and top 5 by 2047.
This project is the perfect test case. If they win, Indian workers and engineers get world-class training. That tech stays here forever. It’s like learning to build iPhones in India instead of just assembling them.
@theicai Dear ICAI CA Final exam paper setters, use your own brains to prepare the question papers. If your thinking is sound, you should not need AI to set papers. We are humans writing this exam, not machines.
@theicai Dear ICAI, AFM May2026 paper was the toughest paper ever. Using AI to make questions is making CA aspirants life miserable. I honestly believe that the cumbent heads of ICAI would also not be able to clear this exam in 3hr. Ca aspirants hardwork is joke for you, I guess.
@theicai#ReConduct_CA_final_AFM_exam..
I studied so hard but the way institute asked AFM paper is literally felt like you are playing with my life, my future, my mental health. And there are many more like me.
Is This how a professional institution act??
