It is difficult to describe the impression of a few days in Syria. It was a visit of solidarity with Syrian civil society. We were fortunate to arrive on an important date. Exactly one year ago, Syrians reclaimed their country. This happened after more than fifty years of dictatorial rule. I saw another dimension of evil, as well as a nation that refused to be broken. Grateful that the House of Representatives passed the FULL repeal of the Caesar Act as part of the NDAA. I was grateful to introduce the House legislation for full repeal back in May and to lead efforts in the House for the past six months. Grateful for the support of President Trump, Ambassador Barrack and Senator Shaheen to make this a reality.

Hopeful for Senate passage within days and then to President Trump’s desk for signature.

Today, I visited with Bishop Hanna Jallouf, the Bishop of Aleppo and head of the Roman Catholic Church in #Syria. For the first time in five decades, Syria has an opportunity to create a society that respects all religions and give its citizens a voice in their government.

The Bishop shared with me that #Christians in Aleppo are being respected and that the bells in churches rang out for the first time in 13 years.

Throughout my decade in Congress, I have worked extensively to be a voice for the Syrian people. As Co-Chair of the Friends of a Free, Stable and Democratic Syria Caucus in the House, I will continue to advocate for a new Syria where the millions of refugees can come home to their villages and prepare to build a better country for all citizens.
