Caught up with last week’s #NeeyaNaana. Hearing the elder women say “Solla theriyala, iruku aana solla varala” is still disturbing.

Non Dalit savarna men and women are two sides of the same coin when it comes to caste. Both are ruthless in upholding and defending the system of caste oppression. Caste Hindu women are not innocent bystanders and also the gatekeepers just as much as men. Seeing them only as helpless victims of Brahminical patriarchy is harmful and erases their active role in upholding caste discrimination.

Savarna women invoke patriarchy with one hand and uphold caste violence with the other. If you think caste doesn’t belong in every conversation about India, you don’t understand this country.

If you are offended by this one, then you are the one I am talking about.

And about Savarna men, their story is no secret. The world knows it well, but we still pretend not to see it.

The girl finally said “idhu onnu enaku puthusu illa” with the trembling voice speaks volume. Idhelam paarthu evanum paava padavo paridhaba padavo, shock agavo thevai illa. Thirundhina podhum.

Like I read somewhere, the girl’s reply is merely equal to “Neengalam avlo than da”.

1/ The announcement to remove the word "colony" from official records is a welcome step from the DMK govt. Such moves are often touted as an ultimate way to annihilate caste, while they have proven to fail at even preventing any kind of caste discrimination and violence.

Removal of the Derogatory Designation “Colony”

Thanks to the Hon’ble Chief Minister @CMOTamilnadu for upholding the spirit of the Constitution of India.

Earlier, the word colony was associated with colonial rule and was used in a derogatory sense to describe the alleged policy of exploiting backward or weaker peoples by a dominant power. After independence, the word came to be used to identify the habitation of Dalits, indirectly marking these settlements as those of an enslaved people.

For a long time, the VCK has been raising its voice demanding the removal of derogatory designations that demean the settlements of Scheduled Castes from revenue records.

Our leader, @thirumaofficial, urged the Hon’ble Chief Minister on this matter. I also wrote a letter 06.08.2021 to the Chief Minister requesting the same. VCK MLAs Sinthanai Selvan and Panaiyur Babu spoke insistently about this demand in the Legislative Assembly.

The Madras High Court had also delivered a verdict on this issue as early as 2018.

Article 17 of the Constitution declares that untouchability is abolished and that any practice of it is a punishable offence. However, despite this constitutional guarantee, untouchability continues to manifest in government documents and procedures. One such manifestation is the use of terms like colony and cheri to describe Scheduled Caste settlements—terms that inherently denigrate these communities. Such identification is a violation of Article 17 and constitutes a punishable offence. The government must reflect on the injustice of continuing such practices.

Accepting the long-standing demand of the VCK, the Hon’ble Chief Minister has now announced that the word colony will be removed. This is a significant step, but it should not stop here. The Government Order No. 1531 dated 03.10.1978, issued during the centenary celebrations of Thanthai Periyar, must be fully implemented.

I also urge the Tamil Nadu government to fulfill the VCK’s demand that the derogatory use of the ending ‘n’ in the names of Scheduled Castes be replaced with ‘r’, in accordance with constitutional values.
