🇳🇵🚨 El USGS actualiza y dice que la señal sísmica registrada inicialmente como un terremoto en Nepal fue provocada, en realidad, por un potente deslizamiento de tierra: una avalancha de hielo y roca procedente de un glaciar, y no por un movimiento tectónico natural.

El desplazamiento masivo generó ondas sísmicas equivalentes a la energía de un sismo de magnitud 5,2.

Tras analizar las ondas de largo periodo, el USGS concluyó que esta energía, equivalente a un sismo de magnitud 5,2, fue generada por un gran deslizamiento de tierra, una avalancha de hielo y roca de un glaciar, y no por un terremoto tectónico.

El evento desencadenó un flujo de escombros e inundaciones repentinas en el río Bhote Koshi, en Rasuwa, dejando más de 100 muertos y cientos de desaparecidos.

Update: Today’s catastrophic flood along the Nepal–Tibet border was initially suspected to be a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF). But new satellite analysis points instead to a massive glacier collapse and ice-rock avalanche that blocked a river before unleashing a devastating surge. A #GLOF contribution is still being investigated.
