The best companies don't sell products.
They sell transformations.
The product is just a tool that customers use to achieve the transformations they're striving for.
Customers don't care about the Fire Flower 🌼 (aka: your product)
They care about becoming Fire Mario 🔥 (aka: their transformation)
And doing rad shit! (excuse my French 😛)
So make sure that's what your product delivers:
The transformation that power-ups your customers so they can do rad shit that they couldn't do before!
If you do that, you'll win.
Guaranteed.

@sudonymously@rao2z Yup, and it mimics so well that most users are convinced it does.
And would the reinforcement learning algos specific for reasoning/planning be called LLMs? Or something different? Just curious.
Can LLMs really reason and plan?
As someone who uses ChatGPT everyday for almost every reasoning/planning task, I can (anecdotally) say...
"No, not really."
The LLMeme by Professor @rao2z perfectly captures my experience!
And his post makes this point much more eloquently (and empirically) than my one-person hearsay.

It's a great nuanced read!
Day 13 of #huntinpublicfor a #fintech job
UPDATE
My update is a bit different today.
Let me start with these two all-too-familiar questions:
Q1: "Are you legally authorized to work in the United States?"
Q2: "Will you now, or in the future, require sponsorship for employment visa status?"
I'm sure everyone who's applied for a job on LinkedIn or Indeed has come across these two questions.
To some, these two questions are inconsequential and have zero impact on their applications; they wouldn't even have to think twice about it.
To others, these two questions are the nails on the coffin, sealing the dead-on-arrival status of applications which have to answer No-Yes, instead of the other way around.
The auto-response is:
"Unfortunately, at this time we are unable to consider candidates who are not authorized to work in the US or require sponsorship now or in the future."
For me, I was fortunate enough that my #huntinpublic campaign caught the attention of some fintech veterans, allowed me to bypass the formal paper application step, and went straight into interviews, all of which so far went great.
They like me. I like them. We want to work together.
---
ROADBLOCK
But (as there's always a "but"), my immigration status remains a roadblock.
We can't work together until that's figured out and squared away.
Most work visa applications take at least 9 months, and if it's off-cycle (that's now), then they'd take at least 12 months and up to 24 months in some cases.
And that's only to get the applications processed, where approval is by no means guaranteed.
Most companies cannot afford to wait that long and take that risk for one candidate, no matter how much they like him/her.
Which is understandable!
For an employer, the visa application process can cost tens of thousands of dollars, months or maybe even years of waiting, and exorbitant burden of proof with long lists of forms and requests for evidence.
If I were a US employer, I would think thrice about hiring a foreign national for my company as well, no matter how qualified or how much of a culture fit that candidate is.
It's just hair-yankingly complicated on all fronts: financial, legal, and timing.
The decision is like its own huge valuation project, with complex trade-offs, unclear risk-reward ratios, long payback periods, limited data, many unknown unknowns...
If a company doesn’t already have the infrastructure to process all the above and hasn’t been doing it for years with a dedicated HR department, there is close to zero chance they are able, willing, and ready to hire an immigrant employee.
This is especially true for the companies I’ve applied to and interviewed with, which are mostly small, early-stage, cash-strapped #fintech startups.
That’s the reality of it, so I’m not gonna whine about it and feel sorry for myself.
Instead, I’ll do something about it.
---
A PATH FORWARD
One step back. Three steps forward.
I’ll pause my #huntinpublic campaign here, essentially taking a break from an active #jobsearch.
In its place, I’ll start engaging different immigration attorneys, exploring different work authorization options, and planning for longer-term US immigration.
I’m confident I have sufficient raw materials to build a strong immigration case, with 7+ years of entrepreneurial experience in tech, 10+ years of US higher education, 2 advanced degrees, with one having a STEM designation.
I’m not sure how this exactly going to take shape, but my rough overarching goal circles back to those two ominous questions:
Q1: "Are you legally authorized to work in the United States?"
Q2: "Will you now, or in the future, require sponsorship for employment visa status?"
On my next application, instead of having to answer No > Yes, my goal is to answer Yes > No.
This is so that:
1) my application doesn’t get tossed into the auto-reject pile
2) my qualifications are judged on their own merit, independent of my immigration status
3) the companies who want to hire me can hire me without the burden of immigration paperwork
When the above are true, I’ll resume my #huntinpublic
---
WHAT'S NEXT
One door closes. Another opens.
Although I’ll pause my #huntinpublic, I’ll still #writeinpublic.
Now I’m freed up to dive deeper into the #fintech rabbit hole, since I won’t have to spend time looking through job boards, writing cover letters, and applying for jobs.
As I pick up new concepts and get my hands dirty with fintech projects, I’ll write to share about them.
Writing forces me to put things in my own words, to simplify the complex, to truly understand and internalize.
So this won’t be the last you’ll hear from me.
That I can promise.
Catchu next time 🫡
@sudonymously@Ripple@Rippling Thank you sir 🫡
And yes, 100% agree with making US immigration more straightforward.
If not, Canada is gon' pick up all the international talent trained in the US.

UPDATES:
1) Preparing for a phase shift - My #huntinpublic might enter a new phase soon. Confirmation should come within the next few days. Will make public update then!
2) Preparing for immigration paperwork - For an international student in the US, the hardest part is probably *not* finding a job, but finding a job with a company that is able, willing, and ready to go through all the immigration hassle (which requires time, money, and burden of proof) to officially hire that student for that job. More than the qualifications, more than the interview, more than cultural fit, this is the ultimate test. I'll probably be going through this test soon.
3) Preparing for failure - Not to be pessimistic, but I know first-hand how costly, complicated, and cumbersome US immigration paperwork can be, having been through it a few times. So, while I'm hoping for the best (approval), I'm preparing for the worst (denial). What's crazy is, depending on the specifics of my case, I might not know until 10.5 - 24.5 months from now, and I just need to deal with that reality. I hope I'll be pleasantly surprised, but if not, I'll embrace the result.

INVITATION
As always, I want to end with this invitation to fellow job hunters 🫡
Consider starting your own #huntinpublic campaign!
It's a completely different experience than sitting around all day mindlessly clicking buttons to submit applications to companies who'll ghost you by default.
Trust me, I’m in and out of there every day, and that place is depressing.
#huntinpublic makes the process more bearable.
Hell, maybe even enjoyable!
So come, join me, play along, and have fun!

The most interesting jobs are *not* on job boards.
They are uncovered through:
- coffee chats
- radical candor
- shared passion
- heated debates
- musing on markets
- public experimentations
- intentional idea iterations
- picking the brains of risk-takers
- unfiltered feedback on fuzzy visions
- mutual pursuit of a better tomorrow
This is probably the most important lesson I've learned after 10 days running my #huntinpublic campaign for my first role in #fintech

A friend texted me today and shared that my #huntinpublic campaign inspired her to go for her dream job at a Fortune 500 #healthtech company.
She recently secured a full-time job (which is impressive as she, like me, is an international student and work visas can get complicated), but the role is accounting-heavy and it's not really where she wants to grow her career in.
She wants a finance role, which makes sense since she has a finance degree.
And healthtech is meaningful to her and where she has deep personal experiences, so she really wants a finance role in healthtech.
So I told her what I always tell my fellow ambitious young professionals:
"Shoot for the moon 🚀🌕 and you'll land on the stars ✨"
Now, with some new-found pep in her steps, she's tinkering on her own portfolio in preparation for her own #huntinpublic launch!
Honestly, I can't be more excited to see what she puts together and showcases to the world!
And of course, I'm here to help, just like how so many have helped me so far 🫡
Social Serendipity ✨
This accidentally became the theme of my day today.
I'm not exactly a social butterfly. I rarely go out for drinks, for coffee, for brunch, etc. When I do, I'm usually quiet and honestly kinda awkward...
But my girlfriend dragged me out of my man cave today to go meet her friends for lunch, where I ran into my friend, who dragged me to go grab drinks with our friends (mine and his) who are heading off to different cities after graduation to do all kinds of interesting finance things at different world-class companies.
It was just a year ago when we started our MSF (Master of Science in Finance) program.
Now, everyone is full of hope for the future, eager to start yet another new chapter of our lives!
We talked about (trying to) reconvene at least once a year, each year in a different city, to catch up and see what each other is up to.
Time will tell if we can meet this minimum quota 😅
What's for sure is we'll remember this random day.
Unplanned moments. Ad-hoc pledges. Spontaneous drinks.
Social Serendipity ✨

🤔 How can entry-level positions require 3 years of experience, in that exact position?
What kind of experience are these jobs looking for, like, 3 years of #jobsearch experience?
At this point, I'm pretty sure like these listings are just #jobmarket satires, because they are literally asking for unicorns 🦄.
Maybe they're part of an elaborate effort - a twisted large-scale social experiment - to measure how desperate the average job seekers are in this post-zero-interest-rate world by seeing how many *senior* candidates apply for *junior* positions.
"Entry-level" in that context is just code for "We're just low-key looking for someone with years of experience and will work for essentially no pay."
At least *that* makes sense.
Otherwise, I can't explain why these job listings exist.
Laziness? Typos? Accidental Ctrl + C / Ctrl + V?
No, they seem too consistent and too pervasive that they must be intentional.
Right? RIGHT?
So... To those who are looking actually looking for junior-level positions, I say:
"Good luck!" 🥲
'cause by the time you land one, you're senior-level!

SMALL WIN: Another fun fintech nerd-out session!
I got to meet with the whole founding team of a promising fintech startup earlier today.
Boy oh boy, did we nerd out!
We went down the rabbit hole on both the fin and the tech.
And because the fintech rabbit hole is so deep and dark, there are many things I can help with.
We hit it off!
---
ROADBLOCK: Immigration
They like me. I like them. We seem like a good fit.
Now it's a matter of paperwork...
But unfortunately it's no small matter due to my status as an immigrant.
They're a startup, so understandably they have neither the infrastructure nor the bandwidth to deal with immigration hassles, given how much is already on their plate.
I really don't want to add extra burden on their shoulders.
---
SILVERLINING: A clear(er) path forward
At least they've expressed that they are willing to work with me through the cumbersome immigration process.
Not sure how far we'll get on this front, but I'm super grateful that they'd even look into the paperwork requirements from the employer's perspective.
I do have a few ideas in mind that'd make the process much less painful for both parties.
With both sides collaborating in good faith, maybe we'll figure something out!
Wish us luck!

Day 7 of #huntinpublic for a #fintech job (it's a week already 🤯)
---
RECAP:
The week honestly flew by with much less pain and much more excitement than I thought!
All because I sucked it up, locked away my fear of (potential) public embarrassment, and put myself out there to #huntinpublic.
Thanks to people's incredible generosity and my self-enforced daily quotas, I've made significant progress in my #jobsearch.
The most tangible results I can point to are:
💬 1 second-round interview with a fintech startup I really like
📧 1 referred job application, sent directly to the hiring manager
💯 1 job title that's just right, neither oversells nor undersells me
---
FORMAT EXTENSION:
Because things are going rather swimmingly, I want to do more!
On top of the daily goals, I'm adding weekly goals to my #huntinpublic campaign to make it both more challenging and more rewarding!
So now, my self-enforced activity quotas look like this:
WEEKLY GOALS (new):
- 1 published article on a fundamental fintech topic
- 2 visualizations of key fintech concepts
- 3 fintech podcast episodes for ideation
DAILY GOALS (current):
- 1 post to update my progress
- 2 deep-dives into fintech I admire
- 3 job applications with tailored cover letters
The keyword here is *activity*.
I set these goals strictly as things I can do.
In other words, the goals are all about *my* output (which I can fully control) rather than external outcomes (which I cannot at all control).
Getting portfolio views, gaining help from fintech veterans, earning interviews, and even getting job offers are all eventual side products of my output.
I'd like to believe that results are just a function of me following through on the goals I set for myself, all of which I can fully control and I therefore can achieve.
At least that's what my gut tells me.
"Things will work out if you do you, bud. So, do you, unapologetically."

SMALL WINS:
1) Nerding out on fintech
I had a chat with the founder of a cool fintech startup today.
The conversation started casual, but quickly turned into a fintech nerding-out session!
We discussed the balance between compliance and convenience when designing a customer onboarding experience which have KYC/AML steps.
We entertained ways to apply generative AI in finance, such as processing 10-Ks, 10-Qs, earnings reports, and earnings call transcripts.
We talked about how community banks are *still* key to making sure local SMBs have access to capital, especially after the SVB collapse caused deposits to flow to the giant, too-big-to-fail banks.
We even blurted out pitch-worthy phrases such as "mine hindsight for insights to form foresights."
In short...
We vibed 🙌
It was fun!
So fun in fact, that we set up another meeting this Friday, where I'll get to chat with the CTO and the CFO as well!
I honestly can't wait!
-
2) Fintech-specific job boards
I had a quick call with another fintech CEO.
In 5 minutes, he shared with me 5 different fintech-specific job boards I should look into, all of which I hadn't heard of before.
I knew of some fintech job boards and have tried out a few, but the ones he shared with me are just a lot more, well, fintech-y.
So far I've only been applying via LinkedIn and Indeed for the ease and variety, but will certainly shift my attention to the fintech job boards as I niche down where I'll fit best.
Will do more digging and report back!
-
3) Fintech map
The fintech landscape is so vast, complex, and interconnected that it's tough to search for a corner where I'd best fit.
That's why I'm drafting a (personal) version of the fintech map that'd segment fintech into clear-cut "territories."
It's shaping up quite nice 🗺️
Right now I'm testing it as a mental model to help me keep pace with industry veterans during hard-core fintech discussions, and so far, it works!
I'll share it this weekend after I buttoned it up a bit.
Hope to get your thoughts and feedback!

Day 5 of #huntinpublic for a #fintech job
GOALS HIT:
- 1 post to update my progress
- 2 deep-dives on #fintech I admire (@coinbase and @Betterment)
- 3 job applications with tailored cover letters
---
SMALL WINS:
1) Reconnection
The emerging theme of my #huntinpublic campaign so far is reconnection.
It's only been 5 days since I've started posting...
But I've reconnected with:
- friends I haven't spoken to in years
- clients I worked with a few years prior
- communities I haven't been able to stay active in
- a city I haven't been back to since the pandemic
- a ton of old ideas I once had that are now new again
There's something reassuring about reconnecting with the past as I'm marching into the future.
It reminds me of how far I've come, yet at the same time also reminds me that I haven't come this far just to come this far.
So, as the reminiscing recedes, the marching resumes.
March on!
-
2) Touched grass
Hours of mindlessly clicking "Easy Apply" were cruel.
I felt like a bot programmed to do nothing but filling out repetitive forms which will get looked at by other bots before they make it to real humans.
Finally snapped. Decided to exit my cave to feel sunlight.
Went outside. Saw a dog. Dude barked at me. I barked back.
It's called networking 🐶💬
That's enough socializing for me for the day.
So I threw on my headphone and just took a long #walkinpublic to take a break from my #huntinpublic.
It felt good. I felt a surge of creativity at the end of it.
The outlet for that creativity: This story 😅
-
3) Wordplays galore
Both finance and tech have so many 3-letter abbreviations.
Finance: DCF, IRR, APY, NPV, PNL, etc.
Software: DNS, ISP, API, NPM, PRD, etc.
There are sooo many juicy wordplay opportunities here!
With ChatGPT's help, I'm gonna weave these jargons into jokes for my future posts.
They're to poke fun at both fields, but also to show that I fluently speak the language of both disciplines.
And therefore belong right there at the intersection of finance and tech - #fintech
Stay tuned! I'll be spittin' some (nerdy) bars soon 🔥

Day 4 of #huntinpublic for a #fintech job
GOALS HIT:
- 1 post to update my progress (this 😅)
- 2 deep-dives on #fintech I admire (X1 and Xplor)
- 3 job applications with tailored cover letters
---
SMALL WINS:
1) Managing to have fun
One of the applications asked a witty question:
“What are your favorite hotkeys? And why?”
My answer:
“Obviously the dynamic dual, the combo that’s easiest to learn and hardest to master, the one to rule it all: Ctrl + C / Ctrl + V.
Bad artist copy. Great artists steal.
No truer words have been uttered about the art of software development, especially when 80% of the job is to stand on the shoulders of giants and “borrow” from their work, while the remaining 20% is to piece together the “borrowings” in a new way to make something uniquely useful that didn’t exist before.
I strive to master such art of (ethical) theft using Ctrl + C / Ctrl + V.”
This question was completely optional; I could have just hit submit without writing a word about it and my application probably would have been fine.
But I ended up spending wayyy more time than I needed brainstorming ideas, drafting different versions, and refining my word choices before eventually submitting the answer above.
Why?
Well first because it’s fun!
Creative writing is kinda meditative to me. And today, I need that zen 🧘.
Second is because I really vibed with the way this company just threw in this (seemingly random and inconsequential) question at the of the application process.
It tells me that they have the exact culture I’m looking for: A collective willingness to nerd out on one’s craft, with style!
I really do hope to hear from them, because already, I like them!
-
2) First application with referral
All applications I submitted so far didn't have a referral.
But today, that changed, thanks to the incredible kindness of a university friend I haven't spoken to in years.
Not only did he share his company contact info for me to put him down as the referrer in my application, he also tracked down the hiring manager for the position I'm applying for to let her know that I applied.
Plus, he'll also make a direct intro.
I'm honestly in awe of such generosity... To go out of one's way to help like that is just next-level gracious!

GOALS HIT:
- 1 post to update my progress
- 2 deep-dives on #fintech I admire (@Chime and @C2FO)
- 3 job applications with tailored cover letters
---
SMALL WINS:
1) Following through!
I didn’t at all feel like doing job search stuff today…
And there were many excuses not to!
- I’m in a middle of move
- It’s a Sunday and I gotta run errands
- I was just flat-out lazy…
But I slapped myself and snapped out of it!
Like “Bro, you made a commitment to yourself! Follow through!”
So I forced myself to sit down, opened my laptop, stared at the blank space for a while, did the mindless scrolling and clicking to easy-apply for jobs to build some kind of momentum, then eventually felt warmed up enough to start writing, doing deep-dives, and yeah… following through.
It was a grind today, even though yesterday it wasn’t.
Motivation is fickle. It comes and goes.
So I learned to not trust my motivation and instead trust my process.
A little bit a day goes a long way!
And I followed through.
-
2) Stacks of ideas for the coming weeks
By forcing myself to grind through my own laziness, I somehow got my creative juices flowing.
Suddenly a ton of ideas came to me.
I just frantically jotted them down on stacks after stacks of yellow sticky notes (yes, I still use those 📜)
Now I have on my desk weeks worth of content ideas to expand on.
All of a sudden, despite the avalanche of rejections that are programmed to come my way, I no longer dread the week ahead.
I actually look forward to it!
Can’t wait to shape the sticky note ideas into sharable posts for my #huntinpublic campaign!
