While Egypt was building the pyramids, Britain was already running a mine. โ๏ธ๐ฌ๐ง
In a forest in Norfolk, the ground is covered in hollows. Hundreds of them. ๐ฒ
The Anglo-Saxons thought a god had made them. They named the place after him. Grim's Graves. ๐๏ธ
They were wrong. People made them. ๐
No metal. No machines. Just deer antlers. And muscle. ๐ฆ
They dug straight down through the chalk, over forty feet. Then crawled sideways in the dark, by hand, to reach the best black flint in the land. ๐ฏ๏ธ
Up top, it was split into axes, arrowheads and knives. The tools that ran a whole way of life. ๐ช
They didn't dig one mine. They dug over four hundred. For five hundred years. ๐๏ธ
When archaeologists finally climbed down, the antler picks were still lying on the floor. As if the shift had only just ended. ๐ถ
You can still climb down a ladder into one today. ๐ช
They teach you Britain's story starts with the Romans. Not that we were digging mines while the pyramids were being built. ๐ฌ๐ง
We were makers before we even had a name. ๐

Every time we've stood together, we've won.
Runnymede, 1215. A king who taxed as he liked and jailed who he liked. The barons and the City of London met him in a meadow and made him sign. So today nobody is above the law. Not even a king. ๐
1381: A poll tax on every soul over 15, rich or poor, the same coin. 60,000 farm workers marched on London to say no. It was never collected again.
1688: A king who thought he answered to nobody. The country told him to leave. He got in a boat. Nobody fired a shot. So today Parliament outranks the crown.
1791: 300,000 households stopped buying sugar grown by slaves. Then 1.3 million signed the biggest petition Parliament had ever seen. 1833, slavery ended across the Empire. โ๏ธ
Tolpuddle, 1834. 6 farm labourers swore an oath to stand together for a fair wage. The government shipped them to Australia for it. 800,000 of us signed. They came home. ๐ณ
The vote. 3 petitions, millions of names, 3 times refused. They kept coming back. So today every one of us has it.
1889: 100,000 London dockers stopped work for sixpence an hour. 5 weeks. The port stood still. They got it. So today there's a floor under every wage in the country.
Dunkirk, 1940. The army trapped on a beach, the Germans a day away. The radio asked anyone with a boat to come. 700 did. Fishermen. Ferrymen. A man in his weekend cruiser. They brought 300,000 men home. โต
Live Aid, 1985. A famine, a million about to die. 1 man, a telephone, 6 weeks. 2 billion watched. ยฃ150 million.
2012: 70,000 of us ran the Olympics for nothing. 2020. The NHS asked for volunteers. 750,000 of us signed up in a day.
Every time, the other side had the money, the guns or the crown. Every time, we had each other. And every time, that was enough. ๐ค
They teach you the kings. They never teach you the crowds that made them sign.
That's what Proud Of Us is for. No sponsors. No ads. No agenda. Just the crowd.
We've never lost when we stood together. So let's stand together. ๐ https://t.co/rih7iKwVkN

Tesco has 20,000 employees on their basic ยฃ13ph
The majority of these claim income support.
That taxpayers money should be deducted from Tesco's annual pretax profit of ยฃ2.4 BILLION
We should NOT all be helping Tesco shareholders.
Same for ALL major low pay employers.
BURNHAM?
A young person I support is 18, still in the care system and living in his own flat. He is doing incredibly well.
Heโs settled. Heโs making friends. His college is literally next door. Heโs building a life, finding stability and, most importantly, his mental health is good. Heโs getting his life back on track.
And now the local authority wants to move him miles away โ apparently to save a few pounds.
This is what is so fundamentally wrong with our care system.
We talk about stability, relationships, education and positive outcomes, but when a young person finally finds all of those things, we put a price on them.
What they seem to be forgetting is that moving this young man could cost far more than money. It could cost him his friendships, his education, his stability, his confidence and the progress he has fought so hard to make.
You cannot keep moving young people around to save money and then act surprised when the consequences come back through your services.
This isn't a flat. It's his home.
This isn't just a placement. It's his stability.
And this isn't just a budget decision. It's a decision about a young person's future.
We need to stop treating care-experienced young people like numbers on a spreadsheet and start asking the most important question.....
What will give this young person the best chance of a successful life?
Dog walkers who did not pick up after their pets have cost a New Forest farmer 18 of the 38 calves his herd was carrying.
Tom Gould is a commoner, keeping cattle on the Forest under rights first written down 800 years ago. He scanned 38 cows in calf in March, turned them out onto Wilverley and Longslade for the summer, and when they came back in only half of them calved. Blood tests found every animal in the herd had been exposed to Neospora caninum. Some of the calves that did come were deformed.
Neospora lives in a dog. It comes out in the faeces, sits in the grass, and gets eaten by a cow up to 6 months later. No vaccine exists and no treatment. An infected cow is infected for life, and she passes it down the female line to her heifer calves, so the loss runs past one year's calves and into the bloodline. Gould could not buy his way out either: New Forest stock has to be double tested for TB before it comes in, so a replacement heifer takes a season to get through the gate.
The New Forest Dog Owners Group, 1,200 members, said it was the foxes. The Moredun Institute, which has been studying the parasite for 30 years, says the dog is the definitive host and it has found no link with foxes.
The dog that carries it usually shows nothing. The owner who left it in the grass will never know he did, and he will walk the same path next Saturday with the same dog and the same bag in his pocket.
That is the quiet half of the damage.
Farm animals worth ยฃ1.95 million were injured or killed by dogs in Britain in 2025, up 10% on the year. NFU Mutual asked 1,407 dog owners about it in February.
57% let the dog off the lead in the countryside.
1 in 10 said it has no recall at all.
44% said it comes back some of the time.
72% do nothing to stop it chasing.
Nearly two-thirds do not believe it could harm an animal.
The law moved in March. Unlimited fines in place of the ยฃ1,000 cap that had stood since 1953, and the police can now swab a dog, seize it, and come through your door to do it.
Not one person in any of this set out to hurt an animal, and 18 calves are dead anyway.
Pick the mess up and put the lead on. It is the only request in British farming that costs nothing.

Long before phones, before television, the Great British pub is where people gathered.
Where friendships were made, marriages began, and stories were told and retold over a pint.
Every worn bar top and old wooden beam has heard decades of laughter, grief, gossip and celebration.

Meet one of the smallest pubs in Britain and one of the best.
Tucked into Beck Hole in the North York Moors, the Birch Hall Inn dates back to around 1860 though the building itself has served villagers since the 1600s.
Cash only. No frills. Exactly as a proper Yorkshire pub should be ๐ป
English poetry began in a cowshed. With a herdsman who could not sing. ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ๐ฌ๐ง
Every feast at Whitby, the harp came round the table.
Every feast, Cรฆdmon slipped away before it reached him.
Until one night, Bede tells us, a voice spoke into his sleep: sing me the beginning of things. He woke with verses no one had ever taught him. โ๏ธ
By morning the farm reeve was marching him up the cliff, to the abbess herself.
She could have laughed a dreaming cowherd back to his cattle. But the woman by the fire was Hilda of Whitby.
Born royal, kin to King Edwin of Northumbria, baptised at 13 beside him in 627 with the whole royal court. She was bound for a convent in Gaul when Aidan of Lindisfarne called her back.
By 649 she ruled the abbey at Hartlepool, and in 657 she founded her own at Whitby: monks on one side, nuns on the other, one woman over both. She built it into a school that sent out 5 future bishops.
Bede says ordinary folk carried their troubles up that cliff for her counsel. So did kings and princes. ๐๏ธ
And in 664 the argument of the age climbed it too. The church had split over the date of Easter, two calendars in one kingdom, the king keeping one Easter while his own queen, in the same hall, kept the other.
At the Synod of Whitby, under Hilda's roof, the king chose one calendar so the kingdom could keep one feast. Hilda had stood with the other side. She lost, accepted it and kept her people together. โ๏ธ
That was the judge the cowherd stood before.
She did not laugh. She sat him before her scholars and asked for the song. He sang, and they heard something no schooling could explain. So Hilda set a test: a passage of scripture, turned to verse by morning. He came back with it made. ๐ฅ
She took him in, and the cowherd became a brother of the abbey, spending the rest of his life turning scripture into English song.
The 9 lines from the byre, Cรฆdmon's Hymn, are the first English poem with a name on it.
English poetry begins with a farmhand, because an abbess took him seriously.
Hilda burned with fever for her last 6 years and never stopped teaching. She died in 680. Bede wrote that all who knew her called her mother. ๐ฌ๐ง
And on the shore below her abbey, the rocks lie coiled like sleeping snakes. Legend says Hilda turned the serpents of Whitby to stone. The town's coat of arms carries 3 of them to this day.
โโโโโโโโโโโโโโ
Somewhere in an English classroom tomorrow, a child will write their first poem.
That road begins in a cowshed on a dark headland, 13 centuries back.
They should know who opened it. A farmhand who dared and a woman who listened.
We are the home of British heroes. There is a place for you in it.
