🚨 🧵 Columbia University, my cherished alma mater, has fallen.

Earlier today, Columbia’s Orthodox Rabbi blasted out a WhatsApp message to ~300 Jewish students — a message quite unthinkable in 21st Century America to Jewish people in the city with the most Jewish people in the world. “It deeply pains me to say that I would strongly recommend you return home as soon as possible and remain home until the reality in and around campus has dramatically improved….It is not our job as Jews to ensure our own safety on campus.”

Last week, Columbia’s president head, Minouche Shafik, defended her institution's efforts to combat antisemitism on campus. But since then, the institution has effectively submitted to antisemitism on campus.

Columbia, like other private universities, have stood firm by their commitment to free speech. Speaking out freely is the bedrock of any properly functioning society and a moral imperative. But there is a clear difference - not a fine line - between free speech and violent hate speech and harassment.

That is not to say that anyone advocating for the rights of Palestinians is being antisemitic. Of course they are not.

➡️But antisemitism IS shouting “F—ck the Jews”

➡️Antisemitism IS being spat on and pinned against walls

➡️Antisemitism IS when Jewish students are urged to avoid dining halls, libraries or classrooms for fear of rampant Jew hatred

➡️Antisemitism IS being yelled at to “Go back to Poland”

➡️Antisemitism IS calling openly and unambiguously for the massacre of October 7 to be repeated 10,000 more times…”The 7th of October is going to be every day for you”

➡️Antisemitism IS chanting “We love Hamas. We are Hamas”

➡️Antisemitism IS cheering “Zionist pigs off our campus now”

➡️Antisemitism IS “We don’t want two states. We want all of it”

➡️Antisemitism IS shouting “NYPD KKK” and “Public Safety KKK” when safety officers try to disperse crowds chanting violent threats at Jewish students

➡️Antisemitism IS holding a sign up to Jewish students waving Israeli and American flags that they are Hamas’ next targets

➡️Antisemitism IS when pro-Palestinian students chant that “resistance [by any means necessary] is justified"

Tomorrow, we celebrate the festival of Passover, a holiday about freedom - something that is now virtually impossible with so much unrest in the Middle East and in the streets and schools of the United States and Europe.

Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran have been engaged in a shadow war for decades. That changed last night, when Tehran launched an unprecedented direct attack on Israel with more than 300 drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles, almost all of which were shot down. The next few days will be tense as Israel weighs whether, how and when to respond.

It is also worth noting - something that oftentimes gets lost in commentaries of this regional conflict - that the wishes of the Islamic Republic are in most cases totally antithetical to those of the Iranian people. Throughout the clerical government’s 45-year history, the Iranian people have mounted several popular revolts in the hopes of bettering their lives and unseating the oppressive gerontocracy headed by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. The most recent example of that was the historic #WomanLifeFreedom protest movement sparked by the death of Masha Amini in September 2022.

My exclusive interview with Iran’s exiled Crown Prince @pahlavireza, out in @nypost print today, couldn’t have been more timely. We discussed the chaos wrought by the Islamic Republic inside Iran and across the Middle East; what the true aspirations of the Iranian people look like; Tehran’s role in the Hamas massacre on October 7; a possible Saudi-Israeli normalization agreement; and what future role the Crown Prince might play should the theocratic regime collapse.
