@DamonLisch Yup. I’m also suspicious that TEs are more likely to give dramatic constraint-breaking phenotypes compared to SNPs. I.e. Shuffling up the regulatory background can explore the adaptive terrain faster than the slow crawl of SNPs. MCMC for the genome.
@DamonLisch Agreed. There’s also the fact that many mutations are basically neutral, but that is also context dependent. So “neutral” variation can hang around until a propitious context (genetic, developmental, environmental, whatever) arises and suddenly they help (or hurt).
@DamonLisch Also helpful to remember that beneficial or not isn’t a fixed determination, it is always context dependent. Sickle-cell trait would seem to be objectively deleterious, but is beneficial when malaria is around. Maybe any mut could be beneficial in the right context.
