I didn't get "bonds that make us free" but now I do: it's an instance of enabling constraints — you get options not when you keep options open, you get options when you COMMIT to something because options are fractal (!)
My daughter-in-law reported for two weeks that birthing a baby was vastly easier than anything she had ever imagined, read about, prayed for, etc.
Then last night she casually drops she had a bad postpartum hemorrhage and they did a manual clot extraction.
When I expressed shock and concern she just smiled and shrugged. She said “they seemed to know what to do so I didn’t worry. I didn’t feel anything I was fine.”
That exact experience could have been traumatic for many others myself included. She literally just…… doesn’t care. Incredible. She didn’t even mention it when we spoke on the phone. She felt good. Baby did good. She just…. let it go. She didn’t hold the baby for a few hours while they worked on her. She shrugged and said my son held the baby so it was fine. She’s well rested. I’m in awe. My son found this incredibly kind loving woman who is 0% neurotic to marry. Level zero neuroticism. No mom martyr energy. Low neuroticism is such an important and overlooked trait in women.
While we cannot control much, but we can control how we react to things and that’s so much of the battle.

A mathematician is giving a lecture and says, "It is obvious that…."
Then he stops, stares at the board, and thinks silently for ten minutes.
Finally he brightens up and says, “Yes! It is obvious.”
