The pay/benefits point feels a couple steps downstream from the bigger issue
Start with: you called the DSP model “incredibly efficient”… ok, why?
i) If independent operators genuinely manage delivery better, that’s efficiency worth keeping
ii) If @amazon sets the pace/routes/standards while the DSP carries the employment and accident exposure, then part of that “efficiency” may just be moving costs off Amazon and onto “someone else”
And “someone else” isn’t just the driver. Amazon’s delivery system runs on NYC streets, curb space, and public infrastructure. If pushing more throughput means more congestion, crashes, or unsafe driving pressure, New Yorkers feel it too: traffic, crash victims, police, EMS/fire, street management. Starbucks is a useful labor analogy, but Amazon’s operating model reaches much further outside the walls of the business
So the issue starts before the driver’s paycheck. Pay everyone more tomorrow and you still haven’t answered who pays when an Amazon-set quota contributes to a crash, or who can actually change the unsafe condition. And you & @tiffany_caban / @NYCMayor get to the same endpoint - pulling more of NYC’s delivery system inside Amazon - without really weighing the loss of legitimate operators, greater Amazon concentration, and whatever pricing power over consumers comes with the decision
Maybe those tradeoffs still make direct employment worth it. But why eliminate the structure if you can target the evasion?
i) Amazon creates the unsafe quota → Amazon is on the hook
ii) DSP understaffs or skips training → DSP is on the hook
iii) Both contribute → both pay
***Add minimum pay/benefit/safety standards either way
That seems closer to making capitalism work for everyone involved: workers get paid and protected, real operators can still exist, Amazon keeps genuine efficiencies, crash victims aren’t left chasing some thin LLC, and Amazon has a direct financial reason to care about the full cost of how the package moved through NYC… not just getting it to the door on time
@benshapiro Would love to watch Ben but I had a burrito before you told me I was doing life wrong… so unfortunately my Q3 discretionary spending is spoken for
Mr Fetterman. What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought.
Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.
I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.
Here’s the problem. When you put another country above the USA, when you are in the US government, no matter what you say, you aren’t working for the American people. Go be a lobbyist. Register as a lobbyist for a foreign government and make your living that way, but don’t take a paycheck from the US taxpayer. Get out of representing the people of the USA.
@benshapiro You can def read it through a strong Christian lens… but implying hospitality, moral responsibility, and communal consequences aren’t already deeply Greek is… QUITE the take
@ericweinstein Why “Judeo-Christian West”? Is that the same thing as “the West”?
If not, what work is “Judeo-Christian” doing here? Because whether “the West” is defined by constitutional citizenship or religious identity leads to radically different answers
Trump has now restarted the most unpopular war in American history after walking away from every single original war aim last week. He conceded uranium enrichment, missiles development, their relationship with Hezbolla and the nuclear dust.
We’re now solely fighting now over the strait and Lebanon, two non issues before the war.
This thing is an indefensible disaster and all of the people who cheerlead it have been revealed for the clowns and traitors they are.
An Amercian member of congress is threatened by foreign terrorists carrying American rifles, backed by a foreign military paid for by American taxpayers, and the US ambassador to that country says not a word in defense of his own countryman, and instead uses his social media accounts to promote his own vapid cable news appearances, which amount to propaganda for that same foreign country. It’s too much, too insulting and humiliating to America. This is how revolutions start. For the sake our nation, Mike Huckabee should be removed from his post immediately.
🚨 WOW! JD Vance is DIRECTLY calling out Israeli cabinet members for their personal attacks on President Trump
"Donald J. Trump is the ONLY head of state in the ENTIRE WORLD who is sympathetic to the nation of Israel at this moment in time, and he happens to be the head of state of the world superpower.
If I was in the cabinet of the Israeli government, I might not be attacking the only powerful ally that I have ANYWHERE left in the entire world."
"The other thing that I would say is that over the last 3 months, TWO-THIRDS of the defensive weapons that have protected your homeland have been built by AMERICAN HANDS and paid for by AMERICAN TAX DOLLARS.
The problem for Israel is not Donald J. Trump, and anybody in Israel who thinks their biggest problem is the President of the United States needs to WAKE UP and smell the reality of the situation that country is in."
@RoKhanna@AIPAC@AIPAC: “you’re singling out certain Americans and using lists to track their activities”
AIPAC’s business model: track politicians by Israel position, funds the ones who comply, primaries the ones who don’t
Mirror mirror on the wall
The magnitude of what just happened may take some time to sink in.
This is the first time Iran has struck Israel after Israel struck another country's territory (that is, not Iran).
This means that the battle lines have been moved.
Iran's deterrence had already been restored in the sense that Israel knew that any strike on it would be responded to.
But now, Iran has proven that it will also respond to Israeli strikes on Lebanon.
This is the first time in decades that a regional power has the means, capacity, and willingness to put hard power against Israeli military maneuvers or aggression against a third party.
