Yes. The previous Administration let Panama fail on numerous levels. Funding… illegal livestock trading… I can’t help but think “Eat Z Bugs before Z Bugs Eat You” (Klaus Schwab villain voice)
But seriously… either we were dealing with completely incompetent people or it was intentional.
Either way… our best option now is to pound the reproduction rates down as much as possible and hope that winter comes early.
As ESG activists set their sights on American agriculture, states need to step up and protect the farmers who feed this country.
That's why Heartland Impact created the Farmer Protection Act. 🧑🌾
There’s a load of crap floating around on X that claims that DOGE cuts were the cause of the screwworm outbreak. It’s not true, and any cuts in one program were far more than offset by more specific spending to get out in front of it. I find a lot of fault with this administration but this is one that I don’t know how they could have done more.
@factpostnews This is nonsense
FACTS: Biden ignored this threat and allowed it to breach the Panama no-zone. Under Trump the USDA acted to eradicate the encroachment and greenlit the world’s largest sterile fly facility, the gold standard for fighting NWS, which broke ground MONTHS AGO
This evening, I hosted a call with Texas media alongside @USDA Under Secretary Dudley Hoskins and Texas animal health officials to provide an update on the confirmed detection of New World Screwworm (NWS) in South Texas and outline our immediate response efforts.
We briefed reporters on the aggressive actions we are taking right now in close partnership with state authorities to contain and eradicate the pest and reinforced the fact our food supply remains 100% safe.
We are urging producers and animal owners to follow movement restrictions and treatment guidance provided by @TAHC.
USDA will continue providing regular updates as we work closely with state partners, industry stakeholders, and producers to stop the spread and protect American agriculture.
Just wrapped up a virtual meeting with ~50 of our outstanding Texas cattle ranchers and @TAHC. I also have been in contact with @GregAbbott_TX, @LtGovTX, and the @Burrows4TX team.
Our food supply is 100% safe. This potential New World Screworm detection is being fully contained and is not a harm to the American food supply or consumer safety. The NWS specimen has arrived at the airport in Ames, IA and is being transferred to National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL). We will update as soon as we have confirmed test results.
Unfortunately, the open-border policies of the last administration and the resulting illicit cattle movement throughout Mexico have caused NWS to potentially reach our side of the border. BUT, there is no one better than Texas and our live stock producers to have in this fight.
All models showed NWS coming to the U.S. last summer/early fall — so a big thank you to our partners across the industry and local, state and the entire Trump administration for unprecedented action that gave us almost an extra year to prepare for this moment.
Together with so many partners, including the Texas Animal Health Commission, Texas A&M AgriLife, Texas Farm Bureau, Texas Cattle Feeders and Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, we will effectively combat, contain and eventually eradicate this pest.
Additional @USDA personnel have arrived in South Texas to support our partners on the ground. The National Veterinary Stockpile is ready to deploy and on its way. I now call on our producers to be vigilant and watchful. The most effective thing to do right now is to put eyes on all live stock. If you see anything suspicious, contact your state animal health official (linked on the https://t.co/PWVCae53Jw website).
Texas cattle and live stock producers are the backbone of our state and our nation. We will meet this challenge head-on.
