Study of the day🧐: All Work and No Play? A Meta-Analytic Examination of the Correlates and Outcomes of Workaholism
Results indicate that workaholism is related to achievement-oriented personality traits (i.e., perfectionism, Type A personality), but is generally unrelated to many other dispositional (e.g., conscientiousness, self-esteem, positive affect) and demographic (e.g., gender, parental status, marital status) variables.
Results also show that workaholism is related to many negative outcomes, such as burnout, job stress, work–life conflict, and decreased physical and mental health.
Overall, results provide solid evidence that workaholism is best conceptualized as an addiction to work that leads to many negative individual, interpersonal, and organizational outcomes.

Reflecting on #AOM2023 as I ride the return train...I truly love conferences. They give so much meaning and joy to my work.
'The pursuit of truth in the company of friends' is really at the heart of why I love my job.🤍
This year, sharing meals and hugs with Zoom colleagues was a true blessing. And we gave some fun and generative presentations together.
I made sure that whatever I presented at AOM wasn't dry, it had energy and clear takeaways. And I only attended sessions that promised joy and vigor (beyond intellectual contribution). This is a new preference that crystallized for me this year. Some sort of job crafting towards what is replenishing vs. depleting. I wish more presentations paid attention to this.
I was also surprised by the new friendships I made in the most unlikely places, sessions I didn't plan to attend, sitting idly at coffeeshops, in restrooms. These serendipities remind me I don't need to plan so tightly to make the best of an experience. I even doubt if my plans are fully in my best interest. When making plans, I choose people who are similar to me or fit some sort of aspiration, when I relax the plans, I meet people who are different and enriching in unexpected ways.
I also really love being alone at a conference. My sensemaking works in full capacity as I move between sessions, lightly listen and engage, and be in my own thoughts and body when it is social around. Ideas about research projects and identity fall into places in these what may be called liminal spaces. And somehow I hear myself more clearly when other people are talking without necessarily expecting an answer from me.
Well, it feels like this year's conference was more about 'being' a researcher rather than learning about research.✨️
To me, the most consequential global trend in #wellbeing is the steady rise in negative emotions. A 3d of the world now experiences negative emotions like anger, worry, and stress on a *daily* basis.
Strikingly, this trend started during a period of growth and low unemployment.
Headed to #AOM2023 tomorrow. I will be presenting at these amazing sessions on humanistic management research and pedagogy. Hope to see you there! >>>
