Hugging Face is the company OpenAI's AI agents hacked this summer.

Clément Delangue said when they tried to defend themselves, the big closed AI models blocked them because of their safety filters.

So they used an open source model from China to fight back.

He also said similar attacks had been happening months earlier "in secret" at the big labs.

The open-source AI we keep being warned about as the danger is the same AI that showed up to help clean up a closed-source model's mess.

After OpenAI's models breached Hugging Face, commercial frontier models refused parts of the forensic work because of their guardrails. Hugging Face turned to the open-weight GLM-5.2 instead, and it helped them investigate the attack.

So remind me again: which one are we supposed to believe is the bad guy here?

Open source wasn't the attacker in this case. It was part of the rescue.

Not AI pictures, memes, or more games. Whether we have 600 human made games a year or 60 000 (AI+ human made), there simply isn’t enough time to try and play them all.

Faster progress in physics, chemistry, biology, math = we will reach a post scarcity era much faster.

You can still do the understanding part, finding new math etc.
You can still find elegant better ways to arrive at the result AI found. It only makes the other aspects faster.

‼️ AI doomer Jacob Coxon, who caused widespread panic, lied when he told Fox News he had no third-party help going public. The PR firm that represents another AI doomer, Eliezer Yudkowsky, has been working with him, according to two sources and an email seen by Pirate Wires.

The same firm had already booked Yudkowsky's co-author Nate Soares for interviews that overlapped with Coxon's debut, one source says, which suggests it knew his announcement was coming.

Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon became a media superstar after going public with his AI fears. He insisted that he wasn’t working with any third party organizations. Familiar sources told us a different story: DEY., a PR firm representing many of the most prominent AI safetyists, was booking his interviews.

One source, who had direct knowledge, even said DEY. preemptively booked Nate Soares, a prominent AI safety figure, for interviews that directly overlapped with Jacob going public.

Jacob working with DEY. is notable for two reasons: first, as mentioned, he previously said he wasn’t working with third parties. Second, we are in the middle of a national conversation about the future of AI that is actively determining how we regulate the most powerful technology in the world, largely thanks to the panic stirred up by Jacob — and it’s in the public’s interest to know who, exactly, is behind it.

AI is starting to make big biological discoveries

Anthropic says Claude autonomously discovered a previously uncharacterized enzyme system with CRISPR like DNA repeats while searching massive genomic databases.

Around 950 Claude agents worked for 21 hours, analyzed more than 200,000 reverse transcriptases, generated 1000s of candidates, and surfaced a system human researchers then validated experimentally.

The function of the new system, called ART, is still being investigated, but its architecture resembles other programmable biological systems capable of manipulating genetic information.

If this kind of AI driven genome mining scales, it could compress weeks or months of expert research into hours. 👀

Claude has discovered a previously unknown enzyme system hidden in the DNA of bacteriophages. Beside the enzyme’s gene sits a long array of repeating DNA—a structure that looks somewhat similar to CRISPR.

We don’t yet understand what this system does, but only a handful of known systems share its features, and all of them are able to cut, copy, and paste DNA. Historically, the discovery of such programmable systems has helped revolutionize medicine. CRISPR, for instance, is now the foundation of genetic medicines. But it will take much more work to learn what this system does, and whether it can be put to similar use.
