The fatal shooting of an Emergency Task Force officer should serve as a wake-up call.

It highlights the increasingly escalated environment surrounding politically charged demonstrations and the strain placed on public resources.

It should also prompt reflection on the extent to which expressions of support for extremist violence have, at times, been minimized or rationalized within segments of Toronto's protest ecosystem.

To be clear, there is currently no evidence linking the officer's death to any protest movement. It may be entirely coincidental that he was killed while executing a search warrant connected to the investigation into gunfire directed at the US Consulate.

Even so, this is an appropriate moment to examine the permissive environment that has been cultivated around antisocial and unlawful behaviour at some demonstrations.

When intimidation, harassment, violence, or open support for terrorist organizations are repeatedly dismissed as activism, the boundaries of acceptable conduct become increasingly blurred.

Now they’re storming doctors’ homes.

Doctors who treated the wounded are being hunted.
•Dr. Alireza Golchini, a general surgeon in Qazvin, faces possible execution for posting an Instagram story offering free medical help.
•Dr. Ameneh Soleimani, a physician in Ardabil, was arrested for treating injured protesters.
•Dr. Farhad Nadali, an orthopedic surgeon in Gorgan, was abducted after condemning the killings.
•Dr. Saber Dehghan, a neurosurgeon in Sirjan, arrested for helping the wounded.
•Dr. Babak Pouramin, an emergency physician, has been detained for over a week.

Their crime?
Practicing medicine.

What’s even worse than the slur itself is the laughter that it elicits from bystanders.

Isolated hatred can be called out and stigmatized.

But the laughter suggests something far more sinister: that hatred of Jews has been normalized in Canada’s largest city.

It’s the banalization of evil.
