Christian Goldbach's 1742 to Leonhard Euler 📄
Goldbach’s contributions to Euler’s works were mainly in the field of number theory, where they exchanged many letters (196 letters over 35 years) and ideas. Goldbach was the one who inspired Euler to study the distribution of prime numbers, and also proposed the famous Goldbach’s conjecture, which states that
every even integer greater than can be written as the sum of two primes.
"Introduction to Modern Algebra" is another free, extensive set of lecture notes by Darij Grinberg, running to more than 700 pages and covering a broad range of topics in modern algebra.
The notes begin with elementary number theory, including divisibility, congruences, the Euclidean algorithm, Bézout’s theorem, prime factorization, Euler’s totient function, Fermat’s theorem, the Chinese remainder theorem, and binomial coefficients. They then move to equivalence relations and residue classes, rings and fields, ring homomorphisms and isomorphisms, matrices over rings, linear algebra over commutative rings, and polynomials.
