56% of left leaning philosophers (the vast majority of the profession) express a willingness to discriminate against conservatives in the hiring process.
Curiously enough I did office hours today with a startup that cuts companies' LLM token costs by optimizing requests. They can cut costs by about half, which they split with the customer. So the TAM is a quarter of the model companies' corporate revenue. That's a big TAM!
Sleep regularity might matter as much as sleep duration or even more.
Compared to people with consistent sleep, those whose sleep duration varied by >120 minutes had:
- 33-39% higher risk of severe coronary artery calcification (CAC >300)
- 58-75% higher risk of abnormal ankle-brachial index (peripheral artery disease marker)
Independent of sleep duration, sleep apnea, and sleep quality.

@lugaricano@tylercowen Amazon isn't yet listing the Kindle version. And even the paperback isn't listed for sale.... Should be available for pre order!
Lots of arbitrage exists and isn't utilized. Humans are passive incurious and not willing to change.
Only when one person can make money from arbitraging everyone else, do markets get rational (stocks and markets).
Humans are why economic distortions persist
@tracewoodgrains 1. Chess is a game, and efficiency/utility isn't relevant there
In anything outcome related, you only care to "understand yourself" if it helps in utilitarian ways to outcomes
2. Tyler is directionally correct, even if not literally/absolutely
Anthropic and OpenAI agreeing mutually would be necessary but woefully insufficient to actually make a slowdown credible.
You’d have to get the other US labs and the Chinese labs too—otherwise it’s totally unworkable. This is why it’s unlikely to happen
"Parental alienation theory" uses mafia tactics to remove articles criticising it's fake science.
We should assume the whole theory is untrue until open inquiry exists.
Not that parental alienation theory ever had serious decent evidence!
I have no idea if this is a real mental illness, but this group suing to get narrative reviews retracted is so clearly not doing science appropriately, that I'm considering updating to thinking that it isn't real.
Should we really be able to pay to retract papers we don't like?

@ByrneHobart Please rehab diligently and for a long while.
Also, don't trust the average physio. Use judgement (and AI) and try other physios as needed. Sports physios generally better. Big variability on quality
1. They leave an "opt-out" option. Anyone can simply sign a paper that this wouldn't apply to their case

The Tories sought a policy a bit like this for a while. What it amounts to is the banning of living together without being married in the eyes of the state. Now *I'm* fine with that. But I think we should at least be clear with the public that that's the policy.

Excellent 🧵 on how activist scholars have perverted the humanities and parts of the social sciences. Spotting academia’s debasement is easy. The real challenges: coaxing a return to depoliticized inquiry and marginalizing those who cling to ideology.
The Jones Act waiver is going to be politically impossible to undo because nobody will voluntarily increase gas prices. I think this is just a new reality for the transportation sector.
