SIO of India’s national leadership, along with its cadre, gathered at Jantar Mantar in solidarity with the Parliament March called to protest the Union government’s policies and actions in the education sector.

It is deeply shameful that the Delhi Police resorted to lathi-charge and tear gas to disperse peacefully protesting students. Several students were injured in the police action, while many others were arbitrarily detained.

We strongly condemn this blatant display of state high-handedness. At a time when Parliament is in session, the entire nation is witnessing how this government is responding to the legitimate democratic demands of thousands of students - with force, intimidation, and repression instead of dialogue and accountability.

We stand in unwavering solidarity with every student who has taken to the streets in defence of education. We demand the immediate release of all detained students, accountability for the police violence, and a sincere engagement with the concerns raised by the students.

this was around 2 in the noon. met so many young people today who were genuinely puzzled with why they were being met with tear gas shells and lathis. for the massive crowd that turned up, this was by and large peaceful and disciplined. highlight of the day for me was a delhi police SI I met who said he’s dropped his brother off at the protest — said ‘maine bola hat na mat’. Government will get away by making it about the police vs people but it is simply not that.

Universities in India have been systematically dismantled, students have had their futures destroyed, and institutions serving marginalised communities have been systematically targeted for years. JNU, AMU, TISS were never isolated incidents; they were chapters of the same story. If we speak up today on the hunger strike by Sonam Wangchuk and other students, the draconian use of power to silence the protests, let it not be because this is finally a "safe" issue to support, but because we recognise the pattern and understand that an attack on one student's right to education is ultimately an attack on everyone's.
