We have a new pre-print on #Oropouche virus! Recent evidence suggests this emerging #bunyavirus may be associated with #verticaltransmission. Using ex vivo models of the placenta, we found villous trophoblasts are permissive to infection with the #prototype strain BeAn19991.
Thank you to everyone involved including the Amarasinghe and Leung labs at WashU! Special thanks to @RogueRifter for taking a chance on a neuroscience undergrad with no virology background, @sciencekaleigh for teaching me everything I know, and @Rush_PhD for your mentorship!

New pre-print out on Jamestown Canyon virus!
First author of this study @Zach_Frey2 is applying for grad school this cycle. I highly recommend him!

We have a new preprint on #Oropouche virus, the emerging #bunyavirus circulating in South America. In work with the #prototype BeAn19991 strain, we found primary neurons and microglia to be highly permissive to infection.

First case of Oropouche virus, aka ‘Sloth Fever,’ confirmed in Kentucky. Spread by biting midges and mosquitoes, it causes symptoms similar to dengue and Zika. Stay protected! 🦟 @CDCgov@WHO@NIH

Biting midges are small flies that can spread #Oropouche virus. Many commonly used widow and door screens do not have holes small enough to prevent biting midges from getting inside. Learn more about how to prevent bites https://t.co/4fUMJJN4q2
Oropouche virus. Very #demure. Very #mindful.
Until it spreads, kills healthy adults, and causes fetal infection and death.

HCPs: CDC issued a HAN Health Advisory about an increase in #Oropouche virus disease reported in South America & the Caribbean. Five cases of vertical transmission associated with fetal death or congenital abnormalities have been reported. Learn more: https://t.co/qrjRcBTNCA
So proud to be a part of this paper, which also happens to be my very first! Generating the brain slice cultures is one of the coolest things I’ve learned how to do 🐀 🧠 Congratulations to Kaleigh and everyone else that was a part of this project!!
I got to present my research, eat more popcorn than I care to admit, and I won bingo… the first @PittCVR Trainee Symposium was a success if you ask me 😁🦠🍿
Thanks to @mccarthy_kr for organizing the first @PittCVR Trainee Day full of fun science talks and then a screening of #Outbreak with Dustin Hoffman and @PghPopcorn 🍿 🎥
We have a new study out today in @NatureComms that is a #collaborative effort between Cindy McMillen @goingviral88 in my lab and Nate Chapman in Jim Crowe’s lab @VUMC_Vaccines.

We are excited to share the latest Lrp1 paper out of our lab @PittCVR@IDM_PittPubHlth in collaboration with the Amarasinghe @WUSM_pathology and Leung @wustlmed labs at WashU in St. Louis (they are still not on twitter!). @ScienceAdvances
