@Ngnghm I actually had low “bootstrap your os” Forth. Covers a broad range compared to other langs Factor included, lives everywhere even constrained envs. Build tools on top e.g. track n reason about stack. Formal methods to verify on the side
TCO who even gives a damn? How often do ext devs get to write recursive anything let alone force it to be in tail position? Global ns turned out a win imo but u don’t get to leverage all the modularity papers CS profs love to write - who cares? Show me a single el package that defaults to dynamic scope. Single threading is regrettable until u remember you can IPC is a thing and u can bear children and even have dedicated buffer to carry state etc. there are thing to criticize about emacs but the statement as written is … random.
@tomaspetricek Just like mass market cheapened music and graphical arts, made them overall more vulgar and unrefined (with many exceptions, happily)—it cheapened the computing arts, making them overall more vulgar and less refined. With many exceptions, for the happy few. Enjoy!
@JustDeezGuy Sometimes I want to write about my own evolution of understanding of Lisp's social sphere. I was at first amazed and awestruck by what Lisp and Lispers (of yore) had to offer.
But my feelings slowly changed when I saw the same people keep talking about the same things: ...
I think more lispers should read this thread!
@stylewarning you absolutely must write more about your lisp journey. This thread is a start and already pulls the curtain a bit. Selfishly I'd also want you to muse about Lisp in the world where codex / claude et al reign supreme
@JustDeezGuy (Saying this as a Lisp lover:) Some Lispers also just leaned into the whole "enlightenment" thing a little too hard and feel they saw something no one else did. (That may actually be true, but whatever it is they saw isn't typically leading them to writing better programs.)
@stylewarning@nmartyanoff I'm not at all familiar with SBCL internals and accommodations when it comes to systems staff, so I cheated:
https://t.co/nUU4hkt0Kj
Most of it makes sense to me, except maybe arenas. I mean I understand from the C perspective but exactly what one does in CL escapes me.
@stylewarning@nmartyanoff also of note there's a cool series by Kaveh on Kons 9 and graphics dev in CL: https://t.co/C7kpv8dDfX
I don't recall him ever diving into these depths but he did use CL without any issue I believe. Thought tbf I don't think Kons 9 ever came out, sigh
@stylewarning@nmartyanoff Any do this, don’t do that observations? Sprinkle type annotations is probably one. But you specifically point to “architecture”
@laurencetratt Ghostty automation imo is only just planned and not there. Kitty is likely your best option atm. WezTerm may also fit cause Lua but events n hooks limited. Too many bells n whistles for my taste. FYI Kitty won’t run as gui inside a VM e.g. running MacOS - known issue.
well, I patched Emacs to support enough of the Kitty text sizing protocol that Kitty terminal now works. Doesn't solve ghostty but I don't really use it so 🤷♂️ Don't expect it get merged - chances of me assigning rights to FSF and persuading Emacs upstream are slim
forced to switch to WezTerm from Kitty because Emacs and Kitty can't agree about emoji widths .. bloody kill me now
btw @mitchellh the exactly same issue plagues ghostty
https://t.co/2G1FBGbDsb
Emacs peeps will be stubborn as always. WezTerm Alacritty work .. sigh
@valigo@mitchellh Tell me you only program compiled languages without telling me. My dude do u even REPL? What about any number of other processes u need to run remotely? TRAMP is slow, sucks and for fs access only pretty much
@valigo@mitchellh Emacs is absolutely ripe for a decent frontend at this point. I dunno if RPC style a-la neovim is the answer but yeah something is needed
