@mitchellh Totally agree. I am part of the Enterprise CAB and recently suggested we should incorporate OSS members or have one where both are present! @ashtom
I spent the last year trying to show my wizard-obsessed six-year-old that science is its own kind of magic. Yesterday, I opened our Tesla’s trunk with a “spell” (Siri). His eyes lit up, and it finally clicked: “Dad, I want to be a science master!”
@mbateman Our 5yo’s Montessori classroom organized periods where we could be in the room observing the children. The silence was absolutely striking. As was the fact that my 5yo talks about *working* rather than “learning” :)
@mbateman Matt, what’s a good book or coursework you would recommend for a 5 year old starting to count past 20? Ideally with a focus on growing numeric intuition and not just memorization
@bryan_johnson@em72996698 Let’s get it to Mexico, I guarantee we can make it happen, Mercado Libre has one of the best cross border operations on the planet, happy to connect :)
Remember this image every time anyone tells you that “we can’t have infinite growth on a finite planet”
We can, we have, and we will.
People denying that are stuck in the pre-Industrial era, where the only way to increase output was to increase input too.
It’s beyond me how anyone can believe this who’s lived through even just a few years of Moore’s law, or decades of steady technological improvements that better our lives while consuming *fewer* resources.
The second graph shows an even clearer picture — developed countries have completely decoupled GDP growth and CO2 emissions over the last ~20y. Eg in the UK, GDP grew 25% while emissions shrank 20%.
That shouldn’t be so surprising when you consider that environmental-friendliness is a luxury good, best provided by developed economies — it’s hard to care about CO2 emissions when you’re making $5 a day and worrying about your next meal.
The europoor degrowthers will ignore both overwhelming pieces of evidence — both their own qualitative lived experience, and the undeniable quantitative historical record. If you show this graph to them, they hiss like a vampire, repeat their nonsensical slogans and go back to working an excruciating 20 hours a week to regulate innovation out of existence.
The good news is that their vision doesn’t inspire anyone — it’s hard to rally people around an agenda of “what if we were all poor, sick and miserable?” while the other side offers a credible plan for comfort and prosperity.
@AngusMacLane Angus, I have a 4 year old Lightyear mega fan looking for a way to build an XL-14 (he loves that the 4 on it matches his age). Did you work on any MOCs of it? Could you share some photos or ideas? :)
