We have recently made a huge breakthrough in the upcoming Quasar architecture.

We are going to open-source Quasar-Small-Preview, a 3B-parameter model with 1B active parameters, pretrained on 600B tokens with a 5M-token context ready for the coming run

Our expertise in MoE will allow us to create the largest and fastest MoE decentralized run, fully on the Quasar architecture, using distillation

This will enable us to have a state-of-the-art long-context model.

We just completed the largest decentralised LLM pre-training run in history: Covenant-72B. Permissionless, on Bittensor subnet 3.

Combining AI research and mass media deployment, I’ve spent most of my career developing technology to foster communication. If you know the old anecdote about the interpreter translating Bismarck's speech and “waiting for the verb” you know the pain which has led to my new project.

Translation latency gets in the way of understanding. Of course, native speakers know what is coming next, and it turns out, so do LLMs. With the help of the Bittensor community, we will optimise the models to bring instant accurate understanding to everyone.

For those who don't know me, I'm Matthew Karas, CEO of BabelBit. And today, we are launching our Bittensor subnet to develop low-latency speech-to-speech translation software.

Miners will compete to drive latency down, accuracy up, and efficiency higher, competing and collaborating in a global, open ecosystem, and rewarded on performance.

Babelbit is the culmination of decades of getting cutting-edge research out of the lab into real-world products.

I first deployed a neural network when studying at Cambridge in the 90s with Karen Spärck Jones and Tony Robinson. Then I went on to lead a variety of global-scale media products, I designed BBC News Online’s content production system (which incredibly lasted from its launch until 2025); the ITV Player - the UK’s first true click-to-play streaming TV catch-up service; then I was launch CTO of the OU's MOOC platform FutureLearn.

I have authored half a dozen patents across speech tech, messaging and search; developed GAN-based real-time source separation and applied AI to search video archives and perform continuous speech assessment for language learners.

The through-line is simple: I have always put the science to work and ship - sometimes to reach over a billion people.

Why a subnet now? I didn't realise it, but like all inventors, I had a backlog of ideas which I'd like the resources to work on. It's like I was waiting for the combination of Bittensor and LLMs, i.e. the combination of permissionless, distributed AI resources and predictive language processing.

And of course, above all human communication, speech technology deserves to benefit the same market pressure that has made computer vision and AI assisted coding leap forward in the last two or three years:
